Association news Nominate new APA journal editors The Publications and Communications Board has opened nominations for the editorships of Behavioral Neuroscience, the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Neuropsychology, Psychological Methods and Psychology and Aging for the years 20082013. APAGS leadership opportunities available The deadline for APAGS members to apply for 2006 committee positions is Feb. 10. Positions for which students can run for election include: chair-elect; member-at-large, membership, recruitment and retention focus; member-at-large, diversity focus and member-at-large, practice focus. Taylor National Memorial Fund seeks applications for its annual $3,000 Edward Zigler Research Scholarship, which honors Zigler's dedication to Head Start children and families. The scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a PhD in research with an emphasis on psychology, public policy, education or a related discipline. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to child development and the welfare of children and families. Nominate a student-friendly state association APAGS seeks nominations from students for the 2006 Outstanding State, Provincial or Territorial Psychological Association of the Year Award. APAGS, APA's Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice and Div. 31 (State, Provincial and Territorial Psychological Association Affairs), present this $1,500 award each year to a state, provincial or territorial psychological association (SPTA) that has demonstrated exemplary commitment to promoting graduate student development and joint APAGS/SPTA membership. The application deadline is Jan. 31. SPTAs that have won the award within the last five years are not eligible for the 2006 award. Board seeks comments on proposed practice-specialties policy APA's Board of Directors is considering a policy to address perceived lack of clarity among certification mechanisms available to psychologists who wish to identify themselves as having a specific area of expertise. The policy intends to provide guidance to psychologists who may seek specialty credentials, and to protect the public from the adverse effects of credentials that do not actually measure competence. The board encourages APA members and communities of interest to submit comments through the APA Web site at www.apa.org/governance/specpractitioner.html. The deadline for comments is Dec. 31. Apply now for 2006 Minority Fellowship Program APA's Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is accepting applications for its fellowships in psychology and neuroscience. The fellowships seek to stimulate interest in ethnic-minority mental health research and mental health services by providing financial support and mentoring to doctoral students. The fellowships are: The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Applicants must be doctoral students in clinical, counseling or school psychology and plan to pursue careers as practitioners or psychotherapy researchers specializing in ethnic-minority populations. The Mental Health Research Fellowship, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and geared to those pursuing research careers in mental health issues involving ethnic-minority populations. MFP encourages students who specialize in community, social, developmental, health, aging or cognitive psychology, psychopathology or other mental health areas to apply. The HIV/AIDS Research Fellowship, funded by NIMH and targeting those pursuing careers in HIV/AIDS research or prevention. The fellowship is funded as a subspecialty under the Mental Health Research Program. The Neuroscience Predoctoral Fellowship and the Neuroscience Postdoctoral Fellowship, funded by NIMH to support students pursuing careers in neuroscienceincluding behavioral neuroscience, cellular neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroanatomy and other fields. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled full time in a doctoral program when they receive the fellowship. Mental health and substance abuse services applicants must be in an APA-accredited program. All applicants must demonstrate a commitment to ethnic-minority mental health. Eysenck Memorial Fund accepting applications for research The H.J. Eysenck Memorial Fund seeks nominations for its seventh annual award recognizing psychological research on personality and individual differences. The approximately $2,700 award is open to any researcher in any part of the world who works in this area. Applicants must include a summary of the research and its significance and, if appropriate, results, a description of why the award is needed, a financial breakdown of how the award will be spent, a curriculum vitae with photograph, the names and addresses of two referees familiar with the research and an indication of how the applicant heard of the award. The deadline is Jan. 31. Send four copies of the application to The Trustees, The H.J. Eysenck Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 27824, London SE24. The winner will be notified by May 1. Recognize contributions to lesbian, gay and bisexual issues APA's Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (CLGBC) seeks nominations for its annual Outstanding Achievement Awards to recognize psychologists' significant contributions to its mission. This mission is to: Evaluate how psychologists can best deal with the concerns of lesbian, gay and bisexual psychologists. Encourage objective research in areas relevant to lesbian, gay and bisexual adults and youths and the social impact of such research. Examine the consequences of lesbian, gay and bisexual stereotypes in clinical practice. Develop educational materials for distribution to psychologists and others. Make recommendations regarding the integration of these issues into APA activities to further the civil and legal rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual psychologists. Nominees may have made significant contributions to CLGBC's mission either through direct CLGBC service or through independent work. The contributions may be of a scientific, professional, educational, leadership or political nature. All nominations should include a nomination letter of no more than 500 words that describes the nominee's specific achievements and contributions, a curriculum vitae and the names of three people who will write reference letters. No current members of CLGBC or staff of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns Program at the time of the award are eligible for consideration. The deadline for receipt of nominations is May 1. Nominate an outstanding doctoral program in psychology Former APA President Richard M. Suinn, PhD, and APA's Committee on Ethnic Minority Recruitment, Retention and Training (CEMRRAT) Task Force seek nominations from ethnic-minority doctoral students for the 2006 Suinn Minority Achievement Award, which recognizes doctoral programs in scientific and professional psychology that demonstrate excellence in the recruitment, retention and graduation of ethnic-minority students. Three Suinn Achievement Awards will be presented at APA's 2006 Annual Convention in New Orleans, Aug. 1013. Students can download the nomination form at www.apa.org/pi/oema/programs/cemrrat2_suinn_call.pdf. The form requires: The name of the university and type of programs. The number and percentage of ethnic-minority students enrolled. The number and percentage of ethnic-minority students who have earned a doctoral degree during the past five years. Nominators should provide specific information about the program elements that contribute to its success, such as curriculum, faculty and student collaborations, recruitment and retention, mentoring and modeling, and funding.
