The article "APF's Campaign for a New Era tops its goals" (October Monitor) should have stated that Violet Franks, PhD, first professional experience was as a Minnesota state psychologist working in a mental health-care team with mentally ill patients in state mental hospitals throughout Minnesota. Then-Minnesota Gov. Luther Youngdahl charged Franks' team with getting the patients out of restraint and teaching them to be active.
She says that, until then, the patients were not treated like human beings.
"They were afraid of us and we were afraid of them," she says. "We had to learn to rethink the attitudes we had had for hundreds of years."
