Division spotlight Submit your favorite psychology jokes Do you know a good joke about psychology or psychologists? APAs Div. 1 (Society for General Psychology) is sponsoring a contest to find the best psychology-related joke. The division will present awards and $100 checks to three winners at APAs 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20, at its symposium on humor. Apply for Instructional Resource Awards Div. 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) is seeking proposals for up to five $1,500 Instructional Resource Awards. The grants fund projects to develop instructional resources that support the teaching of psychology. Attend leadership and diversity conference Div. 13 (Society of Consulting Psychology) will host a conference titled Leadership and Diversity: Inclusion, Inspiration, and Implications, Feb. 9–11 in Miami. Conference co-chairs are Catherine M. Ruvolo, PhD, and Jeffrey E. Auerbach, PhD, and keynote speakers include Roosevelt Thomas, author of Building on the Promise of Diversity (AMACOM, 2005); Clayton Alderfer, PhD, professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology; Marsha Johnson, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Southern Company; and Juana Bordas, president of Mestiza Leadership International. The conference will feature keynote presentations, breakout sessions, networking events and an emphasis on executive coaching. Div. 15 calls for award applicants, officer nominations Div. 15 (Educational) seeks applicants for the 2008 Paul R. Pintrich Outstanding Dissertation Award, which honors research in educational psychology. The recipient receives a plaque of recognition, a $500 stipend and an invitation to present the dissertation at APAs 2008 Annual Convention in Boston, Aug. 14–17. To be eligible, applicants must be members of Div. 15. Nonmembers may apply for membership when submitting applications. Dissertations must be completed between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2006, and must be in an area of educational psychology research. Applicants must be APA members, students or affiliates; student applicants must attend an accredited college or university. Departments may not endorse more than three students per year. In addition, Div. 15 seeks nominations for its 2007 Richard E. Snow Award for Early Contributions. Div. 15 gives this award to an individual who is no more than 10 years past receipt of their doctorate and who has made significant research contributions to the field of educational psychology. Div. 18 to hold criminal justice psychology conference The Criminal Justice Section of Div. 18 (Psychologists in Public Service), along with the Criminal Justice Section of the Canadian Psychological Association, will co-sponsor the North American Correctional and Criminal Justice Psychology (NACCJP) Conference, in Ottawa, Ontario, June 7–9. The meeting will feature distinguished speakers from England, Canada and the United States, including Marnie Rice, PhD, Paul Gendreau, PhD, and David Farrington, PhD. Organizers anticipate that the conference will be the largest convocation of correctional and criminal justice psychologists ever and a great opportunity for professional development and networking. Pre-conference workshops will be held on a variety of relevant topics and continuing-education credits will be available. The NACCJP Conference is student-friendly, with cash awards for the best student papers and discounted registration. Div. 19 seeks award nominations Div. 19 (Society for Military Psychology) seeks nominations for the following awards, which will be presented at APAs 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20: The Robert M. Yerkes Award for significant contributions to military psychology by a nonpsychologist. The John C. Flanagan Lifetime Achievement Award for career-long achievements in military psychology research, service, product development or administration. The Charles S. Gersoni Military Psychology Award for outstanding contributions to military psychology. Contributions can be in the form of military psychology research, service, product development or administration. The Arthur W. Melton Early Achievement Award for achievements within five to 10 years of entering the field of military psychology. Contributions can be in the form of military psychology research, service, product development or administration. Nominations are due April 15. To make a nomination, send a 300- to 500-word statement that identifies the award and describes the aspects of the nominees work that support the nomination. Also include a brief biography of the nominee. Send materials to Brig. Gen., U.S. Air Force, Dana H. Born, PhD, via e-mail. Div. 19 also offers several student awards, including student travel awards for travel to APA conventions, and a Military Psychology Research Grant to support the contributions of students to the field of military psychology. The Military Psychology Research Grant program assists graduate and undergraduate psychology students with the costs associated with conducting research. Proposals in any area of psychology related to the advancement of military psychology will be considered. The deadline for entries is May 1. Div. 38 announces special journal issue and upcoming programming Div. 38 hosted a one-day program during APAs 2006 Annual Convention titled Expanding Psychology Practice to Primary Health Care: Evidence, Skills and Issues. An upcoming special edition of the Journal of Clinical Psychology will highlight the outcome of the program, and the issue will be edited by Clinical Health Psychology Institute Course Director Rodger Kessler, PhD. The focus of the day was the identification of key issues in the integration of psychology and medicine, with specific workshops designed to teach the skills necessary to implement evidenced-based assessment and interventions with medical patients. The 2006 program was the third in an ongoing series, and is a collaborative effort between Div. 38 and APAs Education Directorate. The 2007 program is titled Helping Patients Manage Chronic Medical Conditions: Treatments that Work, and scheduled for Aug. 16 in San Francisco. Attend Div. 39 Annual Spring Meeting Div. 39 (Psychoanalysis) will hold its 27th Annual Spring Meeting in Toronto, April 18–22. The meeting will include an invited symposium on April 21, titled Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Prejudice and Conflict: A Model for Applied Psychoanalysis for the 21st Century. The program participants are members of the internationally organized Psychoanalytic Work Group on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, and panel members will discuss the origins, dynamics, manifestations and implications of prejudice and conflict on both the individual and societal levels of analysis, as well as strategies for future intervention. Div. 39 will offer 3.5 hours of continuing-education credit to participants who attend both the morning and afternoon sessions of the program. For further information, contact Natalie P. Apply for Div. 47 Dissertation Award Div. 47 (Exercise and Sport) invites applications for its annual Dissertation Award. This award recognizes outstanding student research that has the greatest potential for making a significant contribution to the theoretical and applied knowledge base in exercise and sport psychology. The award includes a plaque and a monetary award, as well as the opportunity to present the winning project at APAs 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20. To apply, send a 1,500-word abstract including an introduction, review of literature, methodology/statistics, discussion and proposed contribution to science and practice; the name and contact information of the applicants adviser; confirmation of the completion of the dissertation and the degree by Dec. 31; and references. The student applicant or his or her dissertation adviser must be a member of Div. 47 at the time of application. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 15.
