Honor an early-career psychologist

APF is accepting nominations for the $1,000 Div. 29 (Psychotherapy) Early Career Award, which recognizes promising contributions to psychotherapy, psychology and the division. Div. 29 members with 10 or fewer years of postdoctoral experience are eligible.

Nominees must demonstrate promising professional achievement related to psychotherapy theory, practice, research or training.

Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Apply for grant to study couple and family dynamics

APF seeks nominations for the 2008 $6,000 Randy Gerson Memorial Grant, which is presented to those who advance the systemic understanding of couple and family dynamics and multigenerational processes.

Applicants for the 2008 grant must have doctoral degrees. Applications should include a statement of the proposed project; a rationale for how the project meets the goals of the APF Gerson Fund; a budget; a statement about how the project results will be disseminated; and a curricula vita. Grants available for LGBT research

APF requests proposals for the 2008 Wayne F. Placek Large Grants and the Wayne F. Placek Small Grants. Both grants support scientific research that increases the public's understanding of homosexuality and aims to alleviate the stress that gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender experience.

Individuals from all fields of the behavioral and social sciences are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have doctoral degrees. Funds are not available for dissertation research or other predoctoral studies.

Applicants can request up to $50,000 for work that proposes new studies that can be completed within two years. The deadline for these large grant applications is March 9.

Small grants of up to $5,000 are available for applicants who can propose a study that can be completed within one year. The deadline for small grant applications is Jan. 31.

APF honorees

Eshelman honored for career in health psychology

APF awarded the 2007 Timothy Jeffrey Memorial Award to Anne Eshelman, PhD, of the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, for her contributions in developing the hospital's clinical health psychology internship and postdoctoral programs. Eshelman has worked for the hospital for more than 20 years, helping to care for patients who are hospitalized for transplants, bariatric surgery, pelvic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, infertility and pulmonary problems.

The Jeffrey Award was established in 1999 by Louise Jeffrey, PhD, to honor her late husband, Timothy Jeffrey, PhD, a clinical health psychologist. The annual $1,000 award is intended to recognize an outstanding commitment to clinical health psychology by a full-time provider of direct clinical services.
