VOLUME 29 , NUMBER 12 -December 1998 Performing a breast exam using the vertical-strips methodTo start using the MammaCare vertical-strips method of checking for lumps, follow these steps once a month, between three and seven days after menstruation: ? Lie on your back with your knees bent over to one side and the back of your opposite hand resting on your forehead. ? Moving the flat parts of your middle three fingers in small circles, begin at the top of the armpit and check up and down in parallel strips. ? With each circular motion, push lightly on the first circle, press midway into the tissue on the second circle and push firmly down to the ribs on the third circle. ? Continue the strips from up at the shoulder and collar bone, down to the bra line, and across to the nipple. Make the vertical strips overlap. ? On reaching the nipple, hold your fingers there, roll flat onto your back and continue the strips all the way over to the center of your chest, or breast bone. Also do several horizontal strips along the uppermost boundary of your breast tissue, along the collar bone. If you find an unusual lump, check for a similar structure in your other breast. If the lump is unique, make a record of it and consult your physician. ?B. Murray To order the complete MammaCare Personal Learning System, write to P.O.
