VOLUME 30, NUMBER 11 December 1999 Sign up to participate in National Alcohol Screening Day APA is sponsoring the second annual National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD), to be held April 6. The event seeks to increase awareness, identification and treatment of alcohol problems. The first NASD screened more than 27,000 participants at more than 1,700 sites nationwide, including hospitals, treatment centers, colleges and various public locations. This year, NASD organizers hope to reach 60,000 individuals at 1,800 community-based screening sites and nearly 150,000 students at 600 colleges on April 6 and during freshman orientation this fall. Those who attend the event will view a presentation about alcohol problems, take a written screening test, review the test results privately with a clinician and receive a referral, if appropriate. NASD is conducted as a partnership of the National Mental Illness Screening Project, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and with the support of numerous leading organizations in the alcohol prevention and treatment arena. The NASD program provides participating sites with implementation instructions, publicity ideas and the necessary educational and screening materials. A copy of the Practice Directorate fact sheet will be included in the materials distributed through the NASD project. To participate as a screening site for the day, you must register by Feb. 1. For more information and registration materials, contact the NASD office at (781) 239-0071.
