Halpern honors first Mexican-American psychologist

APA Past-president Diane F. Halpern, PhD, presented a posthumous presidential citation to Alfredo Castaneda, PhD, at the National Latina/o Psychological Association Convention in Scottsdale, Ariz., in November.

Castaneda was the first Mexican-American psychologist to hold a PhD in the United States, as well as the first to become a full professor. He studied the influence of culture on education and learning, authoring and co-authoring several books, including "Cultural Democracy, Bicognitive Development and Education" (Academic Press, 1974). Castaneda founded the National Latina/o Psychological Association. He also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Experimental Psychology and Child Development.
