APA's online Help Center won a Silver Inkwell Award from the Washington, D.C., chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators in October. Over 200 entries competed for the Excellence and Merit awards in eight different categories. APA's Help Center received the Award of Merit in Electronic and Interactive Materials.
Russ Newman, PhD, JD, APA's executive director for professional practice, and Helen Mitternight, assistant executive director of public relations for APA's Practice Directorate, accepted the award at a ceremony in Arlington, Va.
This is the Help Center's first Inkwell award, and its first award since the site was redesigned in 2004. Mitternight attributes the award to the site's user-friendly design.
"Whether people are looking for information for themselves, a family member or a friend, the Help Center offers simple, clear information and tips," says Mitternight.
Information featured on the site includes short articles on health and emotional wellness, managed care and health insurance. Visitors can retrieve psychological facts and statistics and find a psychologist through an online locator service. Plus, the Help Center features articles on topical subjects such as disasters, terrorism and recognizing the signs of youth violence.
Recently, APA's online Help Center has expanded its collection of Spanish-language materials. Spanish speakers can now access articles and tip sheets on subjects such as stress, emotional wellness, mind and body health, and developing resilience. Readers can also find Spanish-language information relating to work, school, family and relationship issues.
"With the help of the Puerto Rico Psychological Association, which is providing translation services, we are adding new materials all the time," says Mitternight, who adds that all new material added to the Help Center will be duplicated in Spanish.
