Commission receives petition for specialty recognition

This fall, APA's Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP) has received a petition to recognize behavioral psychology as a specialty by APA. This petition is the result of combined efforts and contributions of APA divisions 25 (Experimental Analysis of Behavior) and 33 (Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities) and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy and the Association for Behavior Analysis-International.

According to CRSPPP's procedures, there must be a period of public notice and opportunity for comment before a petition can be reviewed by CRSPPP. On Sept. 1, copies of the petition became available for review. Copies of the comments and the petition are available upon request. Written replies to comments may be submitted until Feb. 1. For more information, contact Martha Braswell, special projects officer, Education Directorate, at the APA address, (202) 336-6140.

Funds available for travel to international congress

APA has applied for funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support a block travel grant program that allows U.S. participants to attend the scientific program of the XVII International Congress of Psychology in Stockholm, Sweden, July 23-28, 2000. NSF funding will be used exclusively for scholars working in areas that are central to the NSF mission: the description, modeling and development of human mental and perceptual processes, including learning, reasoning, problem solving, concept formation, memory attention and perception. At least half of the awards will be granted to investigators who are either students or within eight years of receiving their doctoral degree. Although APA has not received final word from NSF on availability of funding, applications are now available from the Office of International Affairs at the APA address, (202) 336-6025; fax: (202) 218-3599.
