Div. 23 (Society for Consumer Psychology)

The 2000 advertising and consumer psychology conference, to be held May 19-21 in Ann Arbor, Mich., is a joint effort by Div. 23, the Marketing Science Institute and the Yaffe Center for Persuasive Communication at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

The theme of this year's conference is "visual persuasion." Guest lecturers will discuss whether visual communication has a stronger influence than verbal communication, especially in advertising. Participants from a variety of disciplines, including film, graphic design, communications and social, cognitive and perceptual psychology, will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of visual persuasion, how it effects consumers, which consumers and topics will be most affected by visual persuasion, and other topics.

Full conference information will be available on the Div. 23 web site (www.cob.ohio-state.edu/scp) in late February.

Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues-SPSSI)

Div. 9 invites applications for the Clara Mayo Grants, which give $1,000 to graduate students for their master's theses or predissertation research on sexism, racism or prejudice.

SPSSI encourages submissions on applying theory or proposing interventions or treatments to address these problems. Only graduate students who have matriculated in graduate programs in psychology, applied social science and other related disciplines are eligible to apply for these grants.

Applications should include five copies each of:

  • A cover sheet with title of thesis, student name, address, e-mail address and phone and fax numbers.

  • A 100-word abstract explaining the proposed research.

  • A statement summarizing the goals for the project, research methodology and procedures to be used.

  • An explanation describing how the research matches SPSSI's goals and funding criteria.

  • A statement verifying the person's degree program.

  • A recommendation from a faculty advisor and proof that the proposal is for a master's thesis or for pre-dissertation research.

  • A budget that justifies the amount requested.

  • A letter from the university agreeing to match the funds requested. Students may still apply for the grant if the university does not agree to match funds.

The deadline for submission is March 31. For complete submission guidelines, contact SPSSI, Attn: Clara Mayo Grants Program, P.O. Box 1248, Ann Arbor, MI 48106-1248, (734) 662-9130; web site: www.spssi.org.
