Nominate your colleagues for women leadership awards
The APA Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) invites nominations for its 18th annual leadership awards, a demonstration of CWP's commitment to ensure that women receive equity both within psychology and as consumers of psychological services, and that issues pertaining to women are kept at the forefront of psychological research, education, training and practice.

Nominees will be identified as emerging or distinguished leaders in one or more areas of influence: service provision, scholarship, public interest and service in psychology. Emerging leaders are psychologists who have received their doctorate within the past 15 years, have made a substantial contribution to women in psychology and show promise of an extensive, influential career. Distinguished leaders are psychologists who have worked for 15 years or more after receiving their doctorates. They should have a long-standing influence on women's issues and status and should be recognized leaders in their area of expertise.

Nominations must include a brief statement of support for the nominee (500 word maximum), a current vitae (six copies) and three letters of reference (six copies of each). Reference letters should address the nominees' leadership activities, contributions and scope of influence that advance knowledge for and about women, foster understanding of women's lives, and improve the status of women and underrepresented populations of women in psychology and society.

Current CWP members, members of APA's Board of Directors, individuals who have announced candidacy for APA president, and APA staff are not eligible. CWP members cannot make nominations. Award recipients, selected by CWP in March, will be announced at APA's 2002 Annual Convention in Chicago.

Nomination and supporting materials must be received by Feb. 1. Send materials to: Stephanie Olmstead-Dean, Women's Programs Office, at the APA address. For more information, including past award recipients, visit www.apa.org/pi/wpo/cwpawd02.html.

Recognize your colleagues for their work in improving the understanding of communities of color
APA's Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) seeks nominations for the Jeffrey S. Tanaka Memorial Dissertation Award in Psychology, which recognizes work that contributes to a better understanding of the psychological issues and concerns facing communities of color.

Tanaka was an Asian-American scholar and psychologist whose work emphasized the importance of culture and ethnicity in the scientific understanding of behavior. He was a fellow of APA's Div. 5 (Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics) and a member of Divs. 8 (Society for Personality and Social Psychology) and 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues). Tanaka was chair-elect of CEMA at the time of his death in 1992.

CEMA welcomes applications from individuals who filed their dissertations in 2000 or 2001 on research involving one or more of the following areas:

* Enhancing the psychological understanding of ethnic-minority issues.

* Improving psychological service delivery systems to ethnic minorities.

* Developing new concepts or theories relevant to ethnic-minority populations.

* Creating methodological paradigms that promote effective research and understanding of the values, beliefs and needs of ethnic-minority communities.

A CEMA-appointed selection subcommittee will choose the winner through an anonymous review process. Criteria include impact on ethnic-minority populations, completeness and clarity, creativity and effectiveness of the research design. The subcommittee will choose semifinalists from submitted abstracts. Semifinalists will be required to submit copies of their entire dissertation for the final selection process.

The winner receives $500; a $300 travel award to APA's 2002 Annual Convention in Chicago, Aug. 23-25; and an invitation to briefly present the dissertation to the membership.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 1. Please provide five copies of no more than 1,000 words. The dissertation title should appear on all five abstracts, although only one should identify the author and provide a current mailing address and daytime telephone number. All submissions should be sent to the Office of Ethnic Minority Affairs at the APA address. For more information, call (202) 336-6029.

Subscription renewal notices mailed
Members and affiliates who have not renewed their APA journal subscriptions for 2002 should watch for renewal notices to arrive in February. Questions related to subscriptions should be directed to APA Subscriptions at the APA address; (800) 374-2721, (202) 336-5600; TDD: (202) 336-6123; fax: (202) 336-5568; or e-mail: Subscriptions.

Join APA's Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs
APA's Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) seeks nominations for two new members to begin three-year terms on Jan. 1, 2003. The committee functions as a catalyst for action on ethnic-minority issues and concerns by interacting with and making recommendations to the various components of APA's governing structure, APA membership and other groups.

Committee members plan, develop and coordinate various activities related to both advocacy and promoting an understanding of the cultures and psychological well-being of ethnic-minority populations, and monitoring and assessing institutional barriers to equal access to psychological services and equitable representation in the profession of psychology.

To fulfill its commitment to full diversity in representation, the slates should be filled by an African- American/black male psychologist and a Latino/Hispanic male psychologist.

Committee members are required to attend two committee meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Members also work on CEMA priorities when necessary between meetings. If possible, CEMA members attend APA's Annual Convention at their own expense to participate in CEMA-sponsored convention programming. Nomination materials should include the nominee's qualifications (including a statement of relevant experience), a current curriculum vitae and a letter of interest to serve a three-year term on CEMA if appointed. Self-nominations are encouraged. Nominations and supporting materials should be sent no later than July 1 to the Office of Ethnic Minority Affairs at the APA address.
