In Brief
APA and the APA Practice Organization's College of Professional Psychology will sponsor the fourth annual National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) on April 11. The deadline for registration is Feb. 15.
NASD seeks to increase awareness of alcohol problems, identify those in need, and connect individuals and their families with support and treatment services.
Psychologists who participate are supplied with a procedure manual, sample publicity materials, educational pamphlets, a video and screening forms with scoring instructions and referral guidelines to educate and screen community members for a range of alcohol problems.
Last year, screenings took place at roughly 1,300 sites nationwide, including hospitals, mental health clinics, colleges, primary-care offices and in public settings such as supermarkets, senior centers and libraries. This year's program will include a new communications campaign that raises public awareness about the consequences of at-risk drinking and alcohol's impact on the risk of developing illnesses such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.
APA has co-sponsored NASD since its inception and contributes educational materials to the screening kits. For registration information, call (781) 239-0071.
