With as many as 50 percent of premature deaths related to lifestyle factors, psychologists' work to help Americans embrace healthier habits can make a giant contribution to the nation's health. Helping psychologists expand their work in health psychology is the goal of an APA co-sponsored conference next month.
"Creating a New Vision for Health Promotion," set for Feb. 25-March 1 in Lake Tahoe, Nev., will enable psychologists and other health professionals from around the country to strategize about ways they can work together to promote health in all elements of society--schools, families, neighborhoods, health organizations and health policies.
The event is being co-sponsored by APA, the American Journal of Health Promotion (AJHP), and several other groups, such as the American Public Health Association, Wellness Councils of America and the American Nursing Academy.
The conference will appeal to professionals from many disciplines, according to Michael O'Donnell, MD, MBA, president of the AJHP: "Scientists who want to know what the research says, practitioners who want to know how to apply that research, and policy-makers who want to know what policies to develop."
Sessions will be grouped into 11 tracks: practice community, educational settings, seniors, workplace, policy, complimentary and alternative medicine, psychology, nursing, medicine, nutrition, and exercise and science.
