Association News Become a regional trainer on HIV/AIDS issues APA's HIV Office for Psychology Education (HOPE) seeks doctoral-level psychologists to become volunteer regional HIV/AIDS continuing-education trainers. Candidates should have HIV-related research interests as well as clinical and training experience with one or more of the following populations:
Ethnic minorities and communities of color. Selected applicants must complete a four-hour online training program prior to attending the HOPE National Training Conference (NTC) in New Orleans in October 2005. APA awards continuing-education credit for completion of both the NTC and the online training. Trainers should commit to training at least 30 mental health professionals within three years of attending the NTC. All HOPE trainers are eligible to offer APA continuing-education credits to workshop participants. Applications must be received by April 22. Nominate an outstanding doctoral program Former APA President Richard M. Suinn, PhD, and the Committee on Ethnic Minority Recruitment, Retention and Training Task Force seek nominations from ethnic-minority students for the Suinn Achievement Awards, which recognize doctoral programs in scientific and professional psychology that demonstrate excellence in the recruitment, retention and graduation of ethnic-minority students. Three Suinn Achievement Awards will be presented at APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., August 1821. The name of the university and type of program. Upon receipt of nomination, the nominee is required to supply supplemental information on elements of the program that contribute to its success. Run for an APAGS Committee position The American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Committee seeks APAGS members to run for the following positions, which have terms beginning in August:
Chair-elect. Committee members develop leadership skills, represent student colleagues and advocate nationally for psychology. The application deadline is Feb. 25. Applicants must be APAGS members, actively enrolled as students in good standing in a graduate psychology program and at least two years from graduation at the time of election. Submit papers for the 2005 Ethics Prize APA's Ethics Committee and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) seek submissions for the 2005 Graduate Student Ethics Prize, which recognizes a student paper on psychology and ethics in science or research, practice, education, public interest or theory. The winner will receive $1,000, a round-trip ticket to APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., August 1821, and three nights of hotel accommodations. The award recipient will present the winning paper at the convention to APA Ethics Committee members for comment, and it will be published in the journal Ethics and Behavior. Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns seeks nominations The Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (CLGBC) seeks nominations for two positions beginning Jan. 1, 2006. Nominees should have experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Same-sex couples and their families. The committee welcomes nominations of psychologists who are members of underrepresented groups, including those who have a disability or are ethnic minorities, bisexual or transgendered. The committee consists of three women and three men appointed for staggered three-year terms. It reports to APA's Council of Representatives through the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest. Committee members attend two committee meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Service on the committee also involves a substantial time commitment beyond the meetings themselves. A statement of the nominee's interests in, and qualifications for, the committee should accompany nominations, along with a curriculum vitae. Self-nominations are accepted. Join national anxiety and depression awareness campaign Freedom From Fear, a national nonprofit mental illness advocacy group, seeks mental health professionals to join its National Campaign on Anxiety and Depression Awareness (NCADA), a yearlong public education initiative that informs the public about the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depressive illnesses and treatment networks. Those who join NCADA are invited to participate in National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day on May 4, 2005. Members also benefit from a year-round referral network, toll-free number and Web site, as well as Freedom From Fear's Survival Kit CD-ROM. There is no cost to join NCADA.
