APF awards $215,000 for LGBT research

APF has announced winners of the 2007 Wayne F. Placek Grants, which support empirical research that increases the understanding of gay men, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people:

• Jennifer K. Bosson, PhD, of the University of South Florida, investigates people's reactions to their own gender role violations with a focus on situational factors that can mitigate people's discomfort during gender-atypical behaviors.

• James A. Coan, PhD, of the University of Virginia, will use functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine brain activity relevant to emotion in gay couples.

• Lisa Diamond, PhD, of the University of Utah, will focus on the nature and development of affectional bonds and same-sex sexuality. She is particularly interested in the longitudinal course of sexual identity development and in factors that influence the expression of same-sex sexuality at different stages of life.

In addition, APF awarded several small Placek grants of $5,000 or less to: Eve M. Adams, PhD, New Mexico State University; Timothy J. Biblarz, PhD, University of Southern California; Andrea Carnaghi, PhD, University of Trieste, and Anne Maass, PhD, University of Padova; Deborah A. Hope, PhD, University of Nebraska–Lincoln; and William A. Jellison, PhD, Quinnipiac University.

APF funds scholarship to study stigma of mental illness

APF awarded the first annual $5,000 Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship to Anne Krendl, a fourth-year graduate student in cognitive neuroscience at Dartmouth College.

Krendl's work explores how people form negative perceptions of people with mental illnesses. She hopes her research will lead to further work on developing interventions that may remediate the stigma of mental illness.

2007 Henkin travel grant goes to Swanger-Gagné

APF awarded its 2007 Paul E. Henkin travel grant to Michelle Swanger-Gagné, of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, to attend APA's 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, where she presented her paper, "Treatment Fidelity Research: Advances in Operationalizing and Measuring the Construct."

The Henkin School Psychology Travel Grant awards up to $1,000 to defray the costs of registration, lodging and travel for student members of Div. 16 (School) to attend APA's Annual Convention. Apply for award for excellence in consulting organizational psychology

APF is accepting nominations for the 2008 Harry and Miriam Levinson Award, a $5,000 gift presented to an outstanding consulting organizational psychologist. Nominees must be APA members who have demonstrated exceptional ability to integrate a wide variety of psychological theories and concepts, and to convert that integration into applications by which leaders and managers may create more effective, healthy and humane organizations.

Apply for $6,000 Gerson Memorial Grant

The 2008 Randy Gerson Memorial Grant provides $6,000 to a doctoral-level psychologist who is working to advance theory, assessment or clinical practice in the systemic understanding of couple and family dynamics and multigenerational processes. Preference is given to projectsusing or contributing to the development of Bowen family systems.

Apply for reproductive behavior/population studies grants

In 2008, APF will award two Henry P. David grants:

• The $1,500 research grant, which supports ongoing research in reproductive behavior/population studies.

• The travel grant, which provides up to $1,500 to support research-related travel or attendance at an international or regional congress.

Applicants may apply for one or both grants and must be conducting dissertation research or must have no more than five years of postgraduate experience. These grants are made possible through a donation by Henry P. David, PhD.

Apply for $25,000 McGuigan prize

In 2008, APF will award its fourth biennial $25,000 F.J. McGuigan Young Investigator Prize to a young psychological scientist explicating the concept of the human mind from a primarily psychophysiological perspective.

Nominees must have doctoral degrees in psychology or related fields and be fewer than nine years postdoctoral degree at the time of their nomination. They must also be affiliated with an accredited college, university or research institution.

APF offers $25,000 fellowship for research on gifted and talented children

APF is pleased to announce a new $25,000 fellowship for graduate students working on activities related to the psychological understanding of gifted and talented children and adolescents.

The Esther Katz Rosen Fellowships are open to students who have achieved doctoral candidacy and are in good academic standing at a university in the United States or Canada. The deadline is March 1. APF seeks proposals for ‘visionary fund' grants

APF believes psychology holds the potential to improve lives and solve some of society's most pressing problems. APF provides multiple grants of up to $5,000 and one $10,000 Raymond D. and Rosalee G. Weiss Innovative Grant for proposals in these three APF priority areas: Fostering mental and physical health; understanding and preventing violence and prejudice to promote peace and justice; and supporting the sustained rebuilding of communities in the aftermath of disaster.

APF accepts applications on a rolling basis and makes its funding decisions quarterly. The next deadline is March 15.

APF gives scholarships to 13 psychology graduate students

In 2007, APF provided $16,000 in research scholarships to graduate students.

Danielle Knatz Bello, of University of Nevada at Las Vegas, was awarded the $3,000 Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship for her project, "Neurocognitive Deficits and Functional Outcome in Bipolar-I Disorder."

A fifth-year doctoral candidate in social psychology at the University of Connecticut, David Portnoy, received the $2,000 Clarence J. Rosecrans Scholarship for his proposal, "Cognitive Processes of Decisions about the Future."

APF also gave $1,000 scholarships to: Robin Aupperle, University of Kansas; Ethan Beckly, Oregon Health Science University; Leigh Botly, University of Toronto; Whitney Botsford, George Mason University; Adam Brown, New School for Social Research; Kristin Flegal, University of Michigan; Donna Kreher, University of Massachusetts; Carissa Low, University of California at Los Angeles; Sita Patel, University of California at Berkeley; Heather Rogers, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; and Jennifer Wright, University of Wyoming.
