Div. 14 honors journalists for psychology writing

The Foundation of Div. 14 (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology) created a $3,000 award to honor the work of journalists for exemplary reporting on the science and practice of industrial/organizational psychology and its impact upon the workplace.

The Raymond A. Katzell Media Award in I-O Psychology will be announced at SIOP's annual conference in San Francisco in April 10–12, 2008. The award was provided by Mildred E. Katzell to honor her late husband, a longtime SIOP member and to encourage journalists to inform their readers and listeners how I-O psychology contributes to maximizing human potential within organizations.

The Katzell Award is open to all members of the media who have written or aired stories focusing on I-O's contributions to the workplace.

The deadline for nominations is March 1. Nominations should be submitted to the SIOP Administrative Offices at 520 Ordway Ave., Bowling Green, OH 43402. Self-nominations are welcome. For more information, visit www.siop.org.

Div. 17 takes a stand against hate crimes

The leadership of the Society of Counseling Psychology took action after learning about two hate crimes at Columbia's Teachers College, the hanging noose on the office door of Madonna Constantine, PhD, and a swastika painted on the office door of Elizabeth Midlarsky, PhD:

• Div. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) Council Representative Helen Neville, PhD, wrote an article for the Div. 17 Web site (www.div17.org/).

• Roger Worthington, PhD, and Amy Reynolds, PhD, volunteered to chair a working group on proactive responses to hate crimes at the upcoming 2008 International Counseling Psychology Conference March 6–9 (www.icpc2008.org/).

• Jean Carter, PhD, contacted the American Psychological Foundation to see if donations could be directed to address hate crimes. APF board members, including SCP members Sandy Shullman, PhD, Ron Levant, PhD, Steven James, PhD, and Norm Abeles, PhD, voted to dedicate the 2008 "Violence Prevention and Intervention Grant" to work focused on addressing hate crimes.

The society is committed to greater educational efforts in response to hate crimes and urges psychologists to be more active in shaping the media response to such crimes. The society plans to post a "readiness to respond to hate crimes" template on its Web site to assist members in active engagement when such incidents happen.
