VOLUME 30 , NUMBER 1 -January 1999 ASSOCIATION NEWSSign up for National Alcohol Screening DayAPA and the College of Professional Psychology are proud to be among the sponsoring organizations of the first-ever National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD), to be held April 8 during Alcohol Awareness Month. NASD, a joint effort of the nonprofit National Mental Illness Screening Project (NMISP) and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), promotes awareness, identification and treatment of alcohol problems. NASD will offer free screenings to the public at more than 1,500 community sites, such as hospitals, treatment centers, and private practitioners' offices and 600 colleges across the country. APA encourages its members to register as NASD screening sites. Participating sites provide qualified health professionals to conduct the education and screening components. NMISP and NIAAA will supply instructions on how to organize and run the screening program as well as the necessary educational and screening materials. The packet of information materials will include a new Practice Directorate fact sheet on alcohol disorders. Participants who attend the screenings view an educational presentation about alcohol problems, take a written screening test, review the test results with a clinician and receive a referral, if appropriate. The free and anonymous screenings do not substitute for formal evaluations, and no diagnosis or specific treatment recommendations will be given. To register for the April 8 program, send a registration fee and completed form to the NASD office. To list your name or organization on the NASD Site Locator Line, please return all registration materials to NASD by Feb. 1. Late registrations will be accepted as long as materials last. However, late registrants may not be included in the site lists sent to local and national media. Each psychologist must handle publicity for his or her screening site. To request registration materials, contact Anne Keliher, NASD Program Manager, at (781) 239-0071. 1999 National Anxiety Disorders Screening DayPsychologists can sign up for the sixth annual National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day (NADSD) to be held on May 5. NADSD provides free, anonymous screening and education programs for consumers and their families who suffer from anxiety problems. Mary Guardino, executive director of Freedom From Fear, a national nonprofit mental health advocacy association, began NADSD to educate the general public about anxiety disorders, to help sufferers find appropriate treatment and to help destigmatize anxiety disorders. Last year, mental health professionals throughout the United States screened more than 50,000 people at over 1,500 sites. Participants watched a video, completed an anxiety-disorders questionnaire, and discussed the results with a professional, who referred individuals to clinicians for subsequent treatment. APA has been an NADSD sponsor since 1995. The deadline to register for NADSD is Jan. 31. For more information, contact Freedom From Fear, 308 Seaview Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305, (718) 351-1717, fax: (718) 667-8893. Psychology exhibition on tourAPA's traveling science exhibition, 'Psychology: It's More Than You Think!' will begin visiting museums across the country this summer. The exhibition offers hands-on activities on the psychological perspective of human behavior. Participants learn about psychology while testing their own abilities, such as memory, concentration, imagination, cooperation versus competition, how individuals think, plan or feel, and several other topics. The exhibition is a compact version of a larger exhibition, 'Psychology: Understanding Ourselves, Understanding Each Other,' a joint venture of APA and the Ontario Science Center (OSC) in Toronto. APA developed the exhibition to introduce the public to the scope of 100 years of psychological research. The American Association for the Advancement of Science displayed the exhibit from August 1996 until October 1998. The OSC is currently refurbishing the exhibit for its tour in 1999.
