A special bylaws amendment to add the word "health" to the first and last sentence of Article I, No. 1 of APA's mission statement passed by an overwhelming margin. Of the 15,212 ballots counted, 14,476 approved and 736 disapproved. The first sentence now reads (in part) "The objects of the American Psychological Association shall be to advance psychology as a science and profession and as a means of promoting health and human welfare by the...." The last sentence now reads (in part), "...and the application of research findings to the promotion of health and the public welfare."
