Dr. Kathleen M. McNamara
* What have you done and what would you do as president to demonstrate your support for scientific psychology?
Specific examples demonstrating my support:
Voting for additional $500,000 for science initiatives and for dues reduction.
Supporting the
science agenda
as liaison from Board of Directors to Board of Scientific Affairs.
Engaging in regular discussions with Public Policy Office staff about Science's legislative and policy initiatives.
Working with President DeLeon on the women and technology initiative.
Endorsing psychology's leadership in the "Decade of Behavior."
As president, I would:
With the science community, develop and promote objectives, highlighting psychological science throughout the "Decade of Behavior."
Emphasize public policy and media initiatives.
Facilitate working relationships with other scientists.
* What professional issues, e.g. managed care,
prescription privileges, master's training, internship requirements, will you emphasize during your term?
Define psychology as primary care: Research confirms the primacy of behavior in health and well-being. Practitioners excel in providing cost-saving interventions. Recognition at a policy level and the resources which follow are next.
Partnering with public sector psychologists: Opportunities exist through public sector systems to address many ongoing professional issues. I will develop, with public sector psychologists, a strategic plan for effectively using existing opportunities.
Maintain psychology's control over scope and areas of practice: APA must respond effectively to the challenges to practice, and move beyond these to our own agenda. CAPP's priorities for the Practice Directorate must be supported.
