Candidates for APA President
What have you done and what would you do as president to demonstrate your support for scientific psychology?
I am a practitioner and one who recognizes that science and practice enrich each other. I have always been a friend to science. I strongly supported granting $500,000 to Science to fund its projects. I support the "Decade of Behavior" and the Summer Science Institutes. As president I will be a strong advocate for Science before Congress. I will work to bring the American Psychological Society back into APA so our advocacy efforts can be multiplied. We fight for the same goals, namely to enhance scientific psychology and have congressional support.
What professional issues, e.g. managed care, prescription privileges, master's training, internship requirements, will you emphasize during your term?
My energies will be devoted to:
- Expanding our very successful public education campaign by doubling our financial commitment to it. The public needs to know who we are. I introduced the idea to Council and APA committed $1 million a year. We can do more!
- I will strongly support obtaining the legal right for qualified psychologists to prescribe. As a member of CAPP, I am working to help at least one state win the privilege in 2001.
- I will work to have APA involved with other health professions in creating a better health-delivery system without managed care.
