1798 The U.S. government created the precursor to the federal public health services on July 16. At that time, the institute offered services originally extended only to merchant seamen.
1896 Jean Piaget was born on Aug. 9. Perhaps the most influential developmental psychologist of the 20th Century, Piaget described orderly stages of growth in the child's cognitive representation of the world and the effects of cognitive development on a broad range of related behaviors. He received the APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 1969.
1970 On Aug. 31, the portrait of developmental and educational psychologist Maria Montessori was issued on an Italian postage stamp.
1981 On July 24, a task force for the psychological study of lesbian and gay issues first met in Anaheim, Calif. The group later formed APA's Div. 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues).
