Attend convention luncheon about Div. 17's newest section

Two events during APA's 2002 Annual Convention, Aug. 22-25, will be held to discuss the formation of Div. 17's (Counseling) new Section on College and University Counseling Centers, which focuses on the needs and interests of psychologists who work in college and university counseling centers:

* "Empirically based decision-making in university counseling centers," a roundtable held Thursday, Aug. 22, 10-10:50 a.m., in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Regency Ballroom A.

* A meeting and lunch reception for those interested in the section will be held Friday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Div. 17 hospitality suite A, located in Chicago's Hilton and Towers.

Div. 28 will host lectures by award winners during convention

Three winners of Div. 28 (Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse) awards will present lectures on Aug. 22 during APA's 2002 Annual Convention. (See the convention program for room location details and times.)

The award winners are:

* Laura Juliano, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who will receive the Outstanding Dissertation Award. Juliano's presentation of her dissertation work is titled "The anxiolytic

effects of smoking: partitioning nicotine and expectancies."

* M.C. Ko, PhD, of the University of Michigan Medical School, who will receive the Wyeth-Ayerst Young Psychopharmacologist Award. He will give a lecture titled "Mu, kappa and delta opioids in non-human primates."

* Roland Griffiths, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who will receive the Brady-Schuster Award and give a lecture titled "Experimental analysis of drug dependence: from caffeine to cocaine."

New award available from Section IX of Div. 39

Section IX (Psychoanalysts for Social Responsibility) of Div. 39 (Psychoanalysis) is offering a prize to a graduate student or analytic candidate for a paper or project that brings a psychoanalytic perspective to bear on a social issue. The prize will be awarded annually during the division's spring meeting at the section's reception. Submissions, due Nov. 15, should be no more than 20 double-spaced pages. Contact information and identifying information about the author should be contained on a separate page that also includes the title and first line of the paper. Attend Div. 48 peacebuilding sessions

The Div. 48 (Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence) is hosting several programs at APA's Annual Convention in response to Sept. 11 and the difficulties in the Middle East:

* On Friday, Aug. 23, sessions include "Fundamentalism, terrorism and psychology's response to Sept. 11," "Intergroup forgiveness in settings of ethnic conflict: international perspectives," and "Global perspectives on violence, nonviolence, reconciliation and recovery."

* On Saturday, Aug. 24, the session "Promoting commonalities of religious identity as a way to peace" will feature representatives and practitioners from the international community.

* On Sunday, Aug. 25, a symposium titled "Breaking the violence-retaliation cycles: roles for peaceworkers" will be presented along with a special invited address following the presentation of the division's Morton Deutsch Award to peace practitioner and scholar Johan Galtung. Immediately following the address, a roundtable discussion, "APA presidents explore psychology's contribution to politics and global security," will feature Florence Denmark, PhD, Bill McKeachie, PhD, Patrick DeLeon, PhD, and Bob Perloff, PhD.
