Thanks to the outstanding work of the APAGS Convention Committee members—Marina Field (chair), Bobby Reis, Melisa Valle, Brian Hall and Donald Knight—as well as APAGS staff, we have developed another slate of excellent convention programs and social activities for graduate students and those interested in their development. Programs cover topics such as internship preparation, mentoring, self-care, balancing family and graduate school or dual careers, dissertations, practicum success, building a practice, licensure and certification, multicultural and acculturation issues, publication and research strategies, salaries in psychology, negotiating authorship, legislative advocacy for psychology, and navigating the convention, just to name a few.

Pre-convention internship workshop. Presented by Mitchell Prinstein, PhD, Greg Keilin, PhD, Shane Lopez, PhD, and myself, our popular four-hour APAGS pre-convention internship workshop ushers in the convention on Wednesday with an in-depth explanation of the application, interview and match process. Registration includes a free copy of “Internships in Psychology: Writing Successful Applications and Finding the Right Match” (APA, 2006). Registration details and fees for this special program are available on the APAGS Web site at www.apa.org/apags.

Breakfasts and yoga breaks. Beginning on Thursday, free “Food for Thought Breakfasts” will be hosted each morning in the APAGS suite, providing students with the chance to chat with and learn from several distinguished psychologists, including Diane Halpern, PhD, Sheldon Solomon, PhD, Tom Pyszczynski, PhD, Jeff Greenberg, PhD, Joseph White, PhD, Cynthia de las Fuentes, PhD, and Ronald Levant, EdD.

With APAGS’s ongoing focus on the importance of student self-care and balance, students are encouraged to participate in one of our free “Yoga Break” classes that will be offered in the APAGS suite on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. APAGS is also sponsoring a special empirical presentation and experiential yoga activity on Sunday. Space is limited for these programs, so APAGS members must sign up in advance at the APAGS booth to reserve a spot for the breakfasts and yoga breaks.

Stop by the APAGS booth. The APAGS booth, located in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will have copies of our many free and low-cost resource guides and materials, information about our gradPSYCH magazine, prizes and giveaways, student surveys, and much more. Be sure to purchase a copy of our new APAGS Resource Guide for LGBT Psychology Students as well as Succeeding in Practicum: An APAGS Resource Guide ($8 each for APAGS members, $12 each for nonmembers). APAGS staff will be on hand at the booth to answer your questions and help students feel welcome and comfortable at the APA convention.

Visit the APAGS Suite. The APAGS Suite will be located in the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel (the room number will be available at the APAGS booth) and will serve as a hub for many fun and exciting APAGS symposia, workshops, award presentations and meetings for those who are interested in becoming more involved in APAGS leadership.

Social hours. Join us at our APAGS Social Hour on Saturday, 6–7:50 p.m., to enjoy wine, hors d’oeuvres and the good company of colleagues, APAGS leaders, APAGS alumni and APAGS staff. Graduate students and prospective mentors are encouraged to attend our annual program “Women Supporting Women: Mentoring Between APAGS and Eminent Psychologists” on Friday, which will be presented this year by myself, APAGS Chair Kristi Sands Van Sickle, PsyD, and APAGS-ACT Chair Nichole Wood-Barcalow, PhD. A large and lively social hour will follow the presentation. Men interested in mentoring and the development of women in our field are certainly welcome!

Night-time fun. Looking for evening entertainment? Stop by the APAGS booth for recommendations and information about how to sign up for APAGS-sponsored activities, such as the APAGS New Orleans Food Crawl. Space is limited for these events.

Get involved. To get more involved with APAGS and to maximize your networking opportunities, volunteer to be an APAGS ambassador. Ambassadors provide information on convention events, distribute APAGS promotional items and monitor APAGS programs by taking attendance and collecting evaluations. All ambassadors must attend an orientation on Wednesday. To sign up, visit our Web site at www.apa.org/apags.

Plan ahead. Plot your schedule now to attend all of the APAGS programs you can—you’ll be in for a treat! Please visit www.apa.org/convention for registration details and additional information about the convention. On-site registration will be available for graduate students for $70. See you in New Orleans!
