VOLUME 30 , NUMBER 7 July/August 1999

Div. 42 offers guide to creating practice niches

Guides to help practi-tioners expand their practices and branch out into new fields of interest will be for sale at APA's 1999 Annual Convention in Boston, Aug. 20-24.

The Practice Information Clearinghouse of Knowledge (PICK 42) guides were developed by APA's Div. 42 (Independent Practice) to provide practitioners with resources and helpful tips to guide them in branching out into new areas.

So far, there are 35 guides covering niches under the topics of health, family, forensics, substance abuse, psychological disorders, and workplace and performance enhancement.

Each contains timely, concise data in a six- to 10-page notebook format with several references. Practitioners can purchase the information in binders so they can update the guides as new information is released. The task force will release more guides on other topics.

PICK 42 also contains tips on how practitioners can market themselves effectively.

"The landscape of practice is changing radically," says Div. 42 President Carol Goodheart, EdD. "Practitioners need opportunities to develop and grow, and not simply be defined in old ways that no longer work for them or the public."

During the APA convention, Div. 42 will host a series of symposia that focus on PICK 42 topics, such as collaborative health practices: primary, specialty and community care; independent forensic practice; workplace practices; and issues regarding family practice.

A notebook with three niche guides will sell for $15 to members of Div. 42, and $25 to other APA members. They will be offered at Booth 625 of the Hynes Convention Center, second level, halls C and D. The hours are Friday through Sunday, Aug. 20-22, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
