Div. 12
Section VIII
(Association of Medical School PsychologistsAMSP)

At Div. 12's invitation, AMSP has joined as a new section. AMSP is composed of psychology administrators and faculty members at medical schools, who historically have been associated with the American Association of Medical Colleges, and more recently, have sought to affiliate more directly with the APA.

Now, according to AMSP President Barry Hong, PhD, almost 3,100 psychologists are in medical schools.

"Psychologists have been in medical schools for 85 years as an invisible presence," says Hong. "But it's time to stand up and be counted."

Hong notes that psychologists exist in almost every medical school clinical department. Medical schools offer a place where clinicians can take part in practice and research in a variety of areas, including pain management, cancer treatment, immunology, genetics, and alcohol and drug abuse.

"Because psychologists have been trained as clinicians and practitioners, we have been very helpful to physicians," comments Hong. "Medical schools recognize our contributions, but we as psychologists haven't recognized what we're doing in the profession."
