Membership to consider changing APA treasurer term to three years

Members will receive a ballot this fall to consider a proposed APA Bylaws amendment that would reduce the APA treasurer's term from five years to three. The new term length was suggested by APA's Finance Committee because the officer's role has changed from an active participant in the budget and financial processes to one who reviews and approves the work of APA's finance staff. The proposed three-year term is the same as that of other APA officers.

At its meeting in February, APA's Council of Representatives approved submission of the proposed bylaws change to the membership. The council also voted to not send a pro/con statement with the proposed amendment. The ballot to amend the treasurer's term will be sent to APA's voting membership along with the apportionment ballot on Nov. 1. If approved, the changes will take effect after the next election of the treasurer in 2004.

Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology seeks new members

APA's Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology (CDIP) is seeking nominations for two new members to begin three-year terms on Jan. 1.

CDIP recommends, influences, develops and advocates on issues, activities and policies related to the equitable treatment of psychologists and others with disabilities in APA's governance structure. Its mission is to promote the:

* Psychological well-being of people with disabilities.

* Inclusion of knowledge about disabilities and disability issues in education, training programs, policies and professional development of psychologists.

* Development and implementation of psychological service delivery modes responsive to the needs of people with disabilities.

* Awareness of disability in psychological research as well as specific research activity in disability areas.

CDIP actively seeks psychologists with disability-related academic, clinical or research experience, and knowledge of APA governance. A strong priority will be given to applicants who have a disability (visible, invisible or due to a chronic health condition or injury) or personal experience with disability. The committee welcomes applications from individuals with minority status or who are retired or employed less than full time.

CDIP members are required to attend two committee meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. In 2002, the committee will meet March 15-17 and Sept. 20-22. Members are expected to work on projects between meetings and are encouraged to attend APA's Annual Convention at their own expense.

Send a curriculum vitae and a letter indicating a willingness to serve and describing a personal or professional experience with disability to Anju Khubchandani, Public Interest Directorate, at the APA address; e-mail: akhubchandani@apa.org. Nomination materials must be received by Aug. 17.

Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns seeks members

The Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (CLGBC) is accepting nominations for two positions beginning Jan. 1. CLGBC seeks individuals with:

* Experience in practice, public policy or APA governance.

* Involvement in a state psychological association.

* Interest and experience in children, youth, family or workplace issues.

The committee has six members--three women and three men--appointed for staggered terms of three years. It reports to APA's Council of Represen- tatives through the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest. Committee members are required to attend two CLGBC meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Service on the committee also involves a substantial time commitment beyond the meetings.

CLGBC's mission is to study and evaluate how to best deal with the issues and concerns of lesbian, gay male and bisexual psychologists; encourage objective and unbiased research in areas relevant to lesbian, gay male and bisexual (LGB) adults and youth, and the social impact of such research; examine the consequences of inaccurate information and stereotypes about LGB adults and youth in clinical practice; develop educational materials for distribution to psychologists and others; and make recommendations regarding the integration of these issues into APA's activities that further the civil and legal rights of LGB psychologists.

The committee welcomes nominations of ethnic-minority psychologists and other psychologists from under-represented groups. Self-nominations are accepted. Send a statement of the nominee's interest and qualifications and a curriculum vitae to CLGBC Nominations, APA Public Interest Directorate, at the APA address. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 1.

Do you speak more than one language?

The Committee on International Relations in Psychology (CIRP) seeks multilingual volunteers who are willing to be on call to assist international visitors at APA's Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 24-28.

While most international convention participants have fairly solid English, some occasionally like help with translations or to just take a break from English to speak their native language. If you speak more than one language and are planning to attend the Convention, please contact CIRP through APA's Office of International Affairs at the APA address; (202) 336-6024; fax: (202) 218-3599; e-mail: International.

Wanted: editorial mentors to assist international scholars

APA's Office of International Affairs seeks psychologists to join its clearinghouse of volunteers who help international authors prepare their manuscripts for publication. The clearinghouse only considers manuscripts of journal articles that are written in English. For more information on becoming an editorial mentor, contact Sally Leverty, Office of International Affairs, (202) 336-6025; fax: (202) 218-3599; e-mail: S.Leverty.
