The latest data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (1996) finds that among children:
6 percent (4 million) had at least one parent in need of treatment for illicit drug abuse.
4 percent (3 million) lived with at least one parent who was dependent on illicit drugs.
8 percent (6 million) lived with at least one parent who was dependent on alcohol.
14 percent (11 million) lived with one or more parents who reported past-year use of illegal drugs, while 11 percent (8 million) lived with at least one parent who reported past-month use.
50 percent (38 million) lived in a household where at least one parent reported cigarette use in the past month.
