APA presidential candidates state their priorities

Dr. Robert J. Sternberg

* What are your top three priorities for APA and how do you plan to achieve these?

Unification of science and practice. Lack of communication between scientists and practitioners hurts both psychology and society. I will strive to unify the groups and to promote their common interests.

Psychology in the public interest. I will advance the use of psychological research/development/action to help reduce violence, promote peace and well-being, prevent exploitation of children, promote free but responsible media, and fight disease, hunger and poverty in the United States and internationally.

Education in psychology. I will set as a top-priority initiative the education of the next generation, and lifelong learning for the present generation of psychologists.

* How can APA maintain and extend mutual support and collaboration between science and practice?

Unified psychology. Psychology has become increasingly fragmented. This fragmentation has occurred at a time in which fields and approaches in psychology rely on each other more than ever be- fore. As a field, psychology needs now, more than ever before, to become unified. There will always be a role within unified psychology for specialization, of course.

Models for science-practice integration. Many practitioners need increasingly to view themselves as scientist-practitioners, just as many scientists need increasingly to view themselves as practitioner-scientists. Practitioners can use science in their practice, but scientists also can think about the practical implications of their work.
