Committee on Aging seeks nominations

APA's Committee on Aging (CONA) is accepting applications for two psychologists to serve three-year terms beginning in January.

CONA advances psychology as a science and profession and as a means of promoting the health, education and human welfare of older adults. Its goals include:

Science: Providing strong and visible advocacy for a scientific agenda on aging to policy-makers and private and public funding agencies.

Practice: Promoting the practice of psychology by advocating policies that enhance the availability and reimbursement of health and mental health services for older adults and their families.

Policy: Contributing to the formulation and support of public policies and associated regulations that promote optimal development of older adults, facilitate psychological practice with older persons and expand scientific understanding of adult development and aging.

Education: Promoting inclusion of knowledge about adult development and aging in all levels of education, including continuing education, training programs and professional development of psychologists.

Public Interest: Promoting the application of psychological knowledge to the well-being of older people, with special attention to the influences of gender, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation and family in science, practice and policy.

Public Affairs: Developing and disseminating information concerning the scientific findings and practice issues about older adults to psychologists, other professionals, policy-makers and the public.

APA: Serving as a visible focus for the coordination of information among groups within APA that address aging issues, offering consultation to relevant APA groups and ensuring that older members of APA receive the appropriate attention of the association.

CONA requires selected candidates to attend two committee meetings, participate in bimonthly conference calls, work on committee priorities between meetings and participate in policy advocacy activities.

To apply, send a current curriculum vitae and a letter indicating your willingness to serve on CONA. The letter should highlight specific competencies and interests that would contribute to the work of CONA. Letters of support from other APA governance groups, APA divisions, state psychological associations and other groups or organizations will also be accepted. The deadline to apply is Sept. 1. Nominate a colleague for aging issues award

APA's Committee on Aging (CONA) is accepting nominations for its Advancement of Psychology and Aging Award. The annual award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in one or more of CONA's goals (see previous item).

To apply, send a current curriculum vitae and three letters of reference that indicate the candidate's contributions. The reference letters should also address the nominee's leadership activities, contributions and scope of influence that advance knowledge for and about older adults and aging issues, foster understanding of older adult's lives and improve the status of older adults. Comment on programs up for accreditation review

APA's Committee on Accreditation is accepting third-party testimony from students, faculty and consumers on all programs scheduled for a 2006 site visit and periodic review.

Join the Committee on Women in Psychology

APA's Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) seeks nominations for two psychologists to begin serving three-year terms on Jan. 1. The committee interacts with, and makes recommendations to, the various parts of APA's governing structure, APA membership, Div. 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) and other relevant groups.

CWP's goals include promoting the health and well-being of women; identifying and eliminating discriminatory practices against women; promoting the unique contributions of women to psychology; enhancing women's leadership within and outside of APA; Monitoring activities of groups within APA to assess the impact on women; and collaborating with others as needed to achieve the empowerment of underrepresented groups. Committee members plan, develop and coordinate various activities involving women's status.

For this term, CWP seeks one active scientist studying women or gender and one full-time practitioner. A person of color should fill at least one of the slates in order to fulfill the committee's commitment to full diversity in representation.

CWP members are required to attend two committee meetings each year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Members must attend all committee meetings, which in 2006 will be held April 6–9 and Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Committee members also work on CWP priorities between meetings and are expected to participate in regular committee conference calls. If possible, members attend a CWP meeting at their own expense during APA's Annual Convention.

Join Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology

APA's Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology (CDIP) is seeking nominations for two psychologists to begin serving three-year terms on Jan. 1.

Currently, the committee is working to develop best practices in research, training and service delivery for people with disabilities, increase the visibility of disability within APA and address training barriers encountered by students with disabilities.

Candidates should have disability-related academic, clinical or research experience. The committee strongly encourages applications from candidates with a disability or personal experience with disability, as well as psychologists who are members of underrepresented groups.

CDIP requires selected candidates to participate in annual committee meetings in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Members also work on projects between meetings and attend APA's Annual Convention at their own expense.

Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns seeks nominations

APA's Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (CLGBC) is accepting nominations for two psychologists to begin serving terms on Jan. 1. The six-person committee serves staggered three-year terms.

Nominees should have experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• Same-sex couples and their families.

• Communities of color.

• Gender identity, gender variance and intersexuality.

• International lesbian, gay and bisexual concerns.

The committee welcomes nominations of ethnic-minority psychologists, bisexual psychologists, psychologists with disabilities, transgendered psychologists and other psychologists who are members of underrepresented groups.

APA requires committee members to attend two committee meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA.

To apply, send a statement of the nominee's interest in, and qualifications for, the committee and a current curriculum vitae to CLGBC Nominations, Public Interest Directorate, at the APA address;

Join Continuing Education Committee

APA's Continuing Education Committee (CEC) seeks nominations for four psychologists to begin serving three-year terms on Jan. 1.

CEC works with the Office of Continuing Education in Psychology and the Continuing Education Sponsor System to develop policy and program recommendations for the association's continuing-education program.

CEC requires members to attend two committee meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. Members also work on committee projects between meetings.

CBC rally tackles health disparities; APA participates

Lori Valencia Greene, senior legislative and federal affairs officer in APA's Public Policy Office, emphasized the need for biomedical behavioral researchers to work together with the federal government to eliminate health disparities at an April 7 Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) press conference and rally that marked the commencement of the CBC's Spring Health Braintrust Conference, an annual conference on current health-care issues.

Greene also stressed the critical role of socioeconomic policies to help change the status of those living in poverty.

Del. Donna Christian-Christensen (D-V.I.), who chairs the CBC Health Braintrust, organized the rally to bring attention to the need to close the gap on health disparities facing underserved Americans in rural, urban, tribal or territorial areas.

Other speakers at the event included CBC Chair Mel Watt (D-N.C.) and representatives of the American Public Health Association, the Association of Community Health Centers, the National Medical Association and the Association of Rural Health.

APA's Fernández testifies in support of HIV/AIDS legislation

On April 18, Isa Fernández, PhD, of APA's Committee on Psychology and AIDS, presented the association's recommendations to reauthorize the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency (CARE) Act to the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The legislation, which will expire on Sept. 30, funds primary health and support services, including mental health and substance abuse services, for medically under- or uninsured people with HIV or AIDS.

APA's Public Policy Office, Office on AIDS and Committee on Psychology and AIDS developed the presentation and recommendations, which call for expanding mental health service delivery systems, training system providers, and improving data collection and evaluation of CARE Act-funded services. Fernández is a public health and preventive medicine professor at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Take part in 5K 'Ray's Race and Walk'

APA will host its 27th annual Running Psychologists 5K "Ray's Race and Walk" during APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. The event is slated for Aug. 20 at 7 a.m. in Anacostia Park along the southern edge of the Anacostia River.

Div. 47 (Exercise and Sport) will present awards to the overall men's and women's winners and the first three finishers in each five-year age group--from younger than 25 to older than 75. The top three finishers who are Psi Chi members and Psi Chi National Council members, as well as the first male and female exhibitor, will also receive awards. Div. 47 will give special recognition to the division that has the most participants.

Preregistration runs through Aug. 12, during which the entry fee is $20 ($10 for students). Registration includes a commemorative T-shirt, raffle entries and postrace refreshments. Registration after Aug. 12 is $25 ($14 for students).
