Apply for Staats Award

Div. 1 (Society for General Psychology) is seeking nominations for the 2006 Arthur W. Staats Award. The award honors psychologists who have linked psychological theory and research.

The winner will present the Arthur W. Staats Lecture for Unifying Psychology at APA's 2006 Annual Convention in New Orleans. The lecture will also be published in The General Psychologist, the division's official journal. In addition, the winner will receive $500 and a certificate.

The division will judge nominees on their creative synthesis, building of novel conceptual approaches and their reach for new, integrated wholes.

To apply, send a curriculum vitae, a statement indicating why the nominee is a worthy award candidate and supporting letters from other endorsers. Self-nominations are encouraged. Shweder delivers Div. 24 invited address

Cultural psychologist and anthropologist Richard Shweder, PhD, will deliver the Div. 24 (Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology) invited address at APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., Aug. 18–21.

In his talk, "Theorizing cultural psychology," Shweder will discuss a theory of mind for the study of cultural psychology.

Shweder is the William Claude Reavis Distinguished Service Professor of Human Development at the University of Chicago.

Shweder's talk is one of several sessions that will explore the division's 2005 convention theme, "Psychology and Pluralism." Other program highlights include a panel on narrative psychology and a multidisciplinary symposium co-sponsored by Divs. 29 (Psychotherapy) and 32 (Humanistic) on evidence-based practice.

Div. 38 convention session to focus on practice, policy

Div. 38 (Health) programming during APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., will concentrate on re-establishing the links between health psychology, practice and policy to influence both individual and public health.

At convention, Div. 43 to highlight substance abuse interventions

The Div. 43 (Family) invited program during APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., will concentrate on two evidence-based models for substance use disorder interventions.

At 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, University at Buffalo of the State University of New York senior research scientist William Fals-Stewart, PhD, and Indiana University psychology professor Thomas Sexton, PhD, will each present a model.


Divs. 44, 19 work to enact military service and sexual orientation resolution

In March, APA's Task Force on Sexual Orientation and Military Service spearheaded a collaboration between Divs. 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues) and 19 (Society for Military Psychology) to follow up on the 2004 APA resolution on sexual orientation and military service.

The task force, which is coordinating the divisional collaboration, is collecting data, planning professional education opportunities for military psychologists, and developing educational materials for the public and members, as well as for professional publications, federal advocacy campaigns and continued interdivisional collaboration.
