APA is seeking nominations for a one-time award to recognize four upcoming Latina/o psychologist leaders. The award, the APA Presidential Latina/o Leadership Citation for Students and Early Career Psychologists, is funded by a grant from Carlos Albizu University to encourage young Latina/o professionals to participate in leadership roles within psychology.

APA will recognize dissertation/doctoral project-level Latina/o students and recent Latina/o graduates from APA-accredited professional psychology programs who demonstrate leadership in the profession. The contributions should not be limited to those that benefit only the Latina/o population, but rather those that affect any sector of the population in a manner that demonstrates commitment to social responsibility, value for human diversity and, optimally, the improvement of quality of life.

APA President Ronald F. Levant, EdD, has appointed a committee of APA members--from nominees supplied by the National Latina/o Psychological Association--to review the candidates' applications. Levant will present the citations during the opening session at APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., in August. A $1,000 prize will accompany each citation.

The criteria for selection are:

• Advocacy--the promotion of increased opportunities for a given constituency through legislative advocacy at the local, state or national level, and/or the promotion of psychology as an effective profession in addressing pressing societal needs, thus advancing psychology as a household word.

• Behavioral health--evidence-based interventions designed to narrow the existing health disparities between minority sectors and mainstream society, promoting psychology as a health discipline.

• Community service--enhancing the delivery of psychological services to minority sectors in clinical practice or through the provision of service-delivery programs to meet the needs of an underrepresented sector.

• Education--designing innovative educational programs or promoting access and/or retention among minorities in programs of formal education at any given level (i.e., primary–postsecondary education).

• Research--generation of new empirically based studies to promote the development of new knowledge in areas of critical importance to the profession, positioning psychology as a top-tier health profession/discipline integrated with the health-care system.
