Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues)

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) invites proposals for its revived SPSSI Action Grants for Experienced Scholars (SAGES) Program. First established in 1994, the program encourages SPSSI's most experienced members to help solve social problems or assist policy-makers by explaining research findings and their relevancy.

SPSSI has revised the program to include projects that draw upon research to:

• Address social problems in any area.

• Prepare literature reviews to be used by policy-makers to make more informed decisions.

• Provide consulting for policy-related organizations.

• Develop and implement action projects, such as teaching children about conflict resolution.

SPSSI has expanded funding to two years and up to $7,000 for a single project. Money can be used for hiring staff, computing fees, travel, telephone or other justifiable expenses, but not for a stipend for the submitting individual. Eligibility is limited to retired SPSSI members or SPSSI members over age 60.

Proposals should include a brief review of the recent literature underlying the project (up to five pages), a timetable, a detailed budget and the submitter's curriculum vitae. Projects that involve collaboration with an organization should include a letter from the organization. SPSSI will evaluate submissions in terms of how well they build on existing social science research and theory, the feasibility of the project and timetable, and the importance of the project in addressing important social issues.

Submit applications by May 15 to Irene H. Frieze, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260; (412) 624-4336; e-mail: frieze@pitt.edu.

Div. 48 (Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence)

Div. 48 is accepting nominations for its first annual Morton Deutsch Conflict Resolution Award. The division established the award to celebrate its 10th anniversary and will fund it with royalties from the book "Handbook of Conflict Resolution: Theory and Practice," edited by Morton Deutsch, PhD, and Peter Coleman, PhD. Nominations should include a curriculum vitae and a letter less than 200 words long recognizing an individual who has made notable contributions to the integration of theory and practice in the field of conflict resolution. The award will be presented to a practitioner whose practice contributes to the development of theory or to a theorist or researcher who contributes to the development of practice.

Send nominations to APA Division 48 Awards Committee, c/o IVT, 6801 Market Square Drive, McLean, VA 22101; fax: (703) 847-0470; e-mail: ivt@microneil.com. The deadline for submissions is March 31.
