APA's first executive secretary dies

Book proceeds donated to ACT Against Violence
Print version: page 88

The ACT (Adults and Children Together) Against Violence campaign--created by APA and the National Association for the Education of Young Children--will receive a boost this spring, when author Annie Spiegelman publishes her second book. Spiegelman plans to donate a portion of her royalties for "Growing Seasons" (Avalon, 2003) to the campaign, and a mention of ACT will appear on the back cover. "Growing Seasons" is a series of journal entries written to her son, in which she chronicles her emotions about motherhood, marriage and family relationships.

"I found ACT a few months ago," Spiegelman says, "while I was driving home from work in San Francisco and was stopped at a red light. Next to me was a bus stop with the black and white poster of a child with all this verbal abuse around him....I got out of my car and wrote down the number." Spiegelman says she had already intended to promote better and nonviolent parenting through this book and was pleased to find a campaign that fit so neatly with her goals.
