When APA President Ronald F. Levant, EdD, chose the members of his 2005 Presidential Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice, he sought to ensure that the group represented the breadth of psychology and consisted of people who could collaborate well with one another, though they held very different views.

Prior to its first meeting in October, the group conducted an extensive literature review on EBP. Then three breakout groups drafted position statements on one part of the Institute of Medicine definition of evidence-based practice--research evidence, clinical expertise or client values--that formed the springboard for the group's work (see main article). In January at its second and final meeting, the task force merged those documents into one. The statement (see box, opposite page) is currently undergoing a rigorous review process, and will reach APA's Council of Representatives for approval in August.
