Education Directorate offers free graduate school openings list

The Graduate School Openings List, a service provided by the Education Directorate, is a compilation of graduate programs with vacancies after the April 15 deadline. Only students who have not accepted an offer from a graduate program should use this service. The list will be posted on APA's Education Web site the second week in May.

If you do not have access to the Web and would like a copy of the openings, please write to Sharon Leiss, Attn: Graduate Openings List, Education Directorate, at the APA address, (800) 374-2721, ext. 6188; fax: (202) 336-5962.

Join the University Volunteer Network to spread the word about APA's student services

APA provides a wide range of services for psychology students, yet many students are unaware of these services. The University Volunteer Network (UVN) gets students connected to APA with the help of volunteers in colleges and universities across the nation. If you are interested in learning more about the UVN or becoming a UVN faculty volunteer, contact Jen Hakel at (800) 374-2721, ext. 5584.

Committee on Children, Youth and Families seeks nominations

APA's Committee on Children, Youth and Families (CYF) anticipates two vacancies in 2001. The committee is particularly interested in candidates with experience and expertise in adolescence (particularly issues of communication and the media), public policy advocacy, children and families at multiple risk, educationally based interventions, early intervention and prevention and resilience issues.

Examples of current initiatives include training psychologists to work in the public sector; psychological implications of disasters; managed care; and immigrant children, youth and families, with specific attention to issues of cultural competence.

The committee places a priority on maintaining representation within the committee's membership that reflects the diversity of psychology and society (e.g., ethnicity, culture, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and geographic location). APA nominations are open to all members, including those who are retired or employed less than full time.

The candidates selected will serve on the committee for three years and will be required to attend two meetings a year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA. The committee will meet on March 2325 and Sept. 2123, 2001; March 1517 and Sept. 2022, 2002; and March 2830 and Sept. 1921, 2003. The successful candidates are expected to attend at their own expense the informal CYF meeting held during APA's Annual Convention. Members are also expected to work an average of 10 hours per month on CYF-related issues.

Nomination materials should include a curriculum vitae and a letter from the candidate indicating a willingness to serve. All materials must be received by Aug. 21. Nomination materials received after Aug. 21 will be held for consideration the following year. Although it is not required, candidates may wish to provide letters (not more than three) supporting their nomination. Send materials to CYF Nominations, Public Interest Directorate, at the APA address.

New booklet available for educators

Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation & Youth: A Primer for Principals, Educators & School Personnel, a brochure for school principals and other school staff, explains normative sexual orientation development in adolescents. The fact sheet also describes the lack of scientific basis to the "reparative therapy" movement.

Just the Facts, prepared by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network and APA's Center for Psychology in Schools and Education (CPSE) Healthy Schools Project, has been endorsed by a number of health, mental health and education organizations, including APA, the National Association of School Psychologists, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association.

APF and COGDOP award scholarships

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) and the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP) awarded $13,000 in scholarships for the 19992000 school year to support psychology graduate students.

Su Yeong Kim was the recipient of a $3,000 Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship, and Timothy J. Loving received a $2,000 Clarence Rosecrans Scholarship.

The Matarazzo Scholarship recipient, Kim, is enrolled in the doctoral program of the department of human development at the University of CaliforniaDavis. She was selected as the top winner among the 19992000 COGDOP scholars for her research proposal on adjustment patterns among 300 Asian immigrant families in the United States. Her study will address two questions: Do the variables of cultural brokering, acculturation and family conflict contribute independently to adjustment among adolescent immigrants? What are the processes that link these variables to adjustment in this population?

Loving, of Purdue University, winner of the newly established Clarence Rosecrans Scholarship, will examine perceptions of nonmarital romantic relationships by friends of relationship participants as compared to the perceptions of the relationship participants themselves. In addition, he hopes to discover why female friends have shown themselves to be more accurate in predicting the outcome of couples' relationships than are male friends.

In addition, eight graduate students received $1,000 scholarships:

* Jason Anthony, of Florida State University.

* Shawn Christ, of Washington University.

* Angela Crossman, of Cornell University.

* Tamara Hartl, of the University of Connecticut.

* Nicole Hooper, of the University of Alabama.

* Patricia Jordan, of the University of Rhode Island.

* Christopher Monk, of the University of Minnesota.

* Simone P. Nguyen, of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

APF awards these scholarships to students who show merit and evidence of need. Each graduate department of psychology that is a member in good standing of COGDOP is invited to nominate one candidate or more, relative to department size, for a research scholarship. Recipients use the scholarships for books, supplies, scientific research or travel to a scientific meeting.
