American Psychological Foundation

Honoring excellence in clinical health psychology

This year the American Psychological Foundation (APF) will initiate a new $2,000 annual award to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of clinical health psychology, the Timothy Jeffrey Memorial Award. Louise Jeffrey, PhD, established the award in 1999 to honor her late husband, clinical health psychologist Timothy B. Jeffrey.

Born in Watertown, N.Y., in 1943, Timothy Jeffrey graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1966. After combat service in Vietnam, he earned his doctorate in 1977 from United States International University in San Diego. For the next 11 years, Jeffrey served as director and, later, internship director for psychology at Fort Ord, Calif., and at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Jeffrey advocated and worked for improved training opportunities for graduate students and psychologists throughout the military; the establishment of uniform standards for psychologists, including mandatory licensure; and the improvement of the status of psychologists within the military. He was president of APA's Div. 19 (Military) in 1989.

Beginning in 1988, Jeffrey served as director of the clinical psychology department at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was a member of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), serving on the ABPP board of trustees. Throughout his career, he was actively engaged in teaching and research, but his favored professional activity was the direct supervision of clinical services to patients. Jeffrey died at his home in Omaha of brain cancer on October 10, 1998, and is survived by his wife, a clinical health psychologist, and two teen-age children.

APA's Div. 38 (Health) will administer the fund, and the division awards committee is currently devising advertising, criteria, deadlines and procedures. Inquiries regarding the Jeffrey fund should be addressed to Timothy W. Smith, PhD, chair, Div. 38 awards committee, at the APA address. Send contributions to APF's offices at the APA address.
