APA to hold first-ever education leadership conference

APA's Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) and Education Directorate have announced tentative plans to host the first Education Leadership Conference this fall.

Similar to the successful State and Division Leadership Conferences hosted by APA, the education conference is intended to:

* Provide groups across all levels of education and training a forum to address issues of mutual concern.

* Facilitate the development of leadership for psychology in education.

* Impact public policy regarding education in psychology as well as psychology in education.

Last October, in response to consultation with liaison groups and the Education Leaders Roundtable participants, BEA initiated a request for an Education Leadership Conference. In March, APA's Council of Representatives approved partial funding for an initial Education Leadership Conference this fall. Combined with an unexpected surplus and support from APA's Board of Directors, BEA is now ready to move forward in conference planning.

The first conference is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23-25 in Washington, D.C. More information will appear in an upcoming issue of the Monitor and on APA's Education Directorate Web site at www.apa.org/ed.

Comment on proposed accreditation revisions

In an effort to improve the quality of professional psychology education and training, APA's Committee on Accreditation (CoA) has issued drafts of the revised "Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology" and "Accreditation Operating Procedures" for public comment.

The proposed changes will be available for a six-month period of public review and comment in accordance with APA policy. The public comment period will continue through Sept. 1. Afterward, CoA will consider all comments, make whatever revisions are considered appropriate, and formally accept the changes to the two documents.

Information on the proposed changes and instructions for making comments can be obtained by contacting the APA Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation at the APA address; (202) 336-5979; Web site: www.apa.org/ed/accred.html.

Editorial assistance available to international scholars

APA's Committee on International Relations in Psychology and the Office of International Affairs are coordinating an editorial mentoring program that encourages international scholars to publish their work in U.S. journals.

The office has established a clearinghouse of mentors who volunteer to help authors prepare their manuscripts for publication. The clearinghouse will only consider journal article manuscripts that are written in English and conform to APA style.

For more information about the APA Editorial Mentoring Program, contact Sally Leverty in the Office of International Affairs at (202) 336-6025; fax: (202) 218-3599; e-mail: S.Leverty.

Reminder: Committee on Children, Youth and Families seeks new members

The Committee on Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) is accepting applications to fill two anticipated committee vacancies in 2002.

Each candidate should submit a letter indicating his or her willingness to serve; a brief, one-page description of a proposed project (e.g., convention programs, edited books, journal articles, policy resolutions or statements); and a curriculum vitae. Although it is not required, candidates may wish to submit no more than three letters supporting their nomination.

The selected members will serve a three-year term and work about 10 hours per month on CYF-related issues. They are required to attend two committee meetings per year in Washington, D.C., with expenses reimbursed by APA.

The committee will meet on March 15-17, 2002, and Sept. 20-22, 2002; March 28-30, 2003 and Sept. 19-21, 2003; and March 26-28, 2004, and Oct. 1-3, 2004. Members also attend the informal CYF meeting held during APA's Annual Convention at their own expense.

The deadline to submit nomination materials is Aug. 13. Send materials to CYF Nominations, APA Public Interest Directorate, at the APA address; (202) 336-6050.

2001 international directories available

APA's Office of International Affairs has compiled two directories to help members contact their colleagues all over the world. The 2001 editions of International Psychological Associations and Related Organizations and National Psychological Organizations Worldwide provide contact information, including e-mail addresses and Web sites, for more than 160 international organizations. To receive a free copy of either directory, contact the APA Office of International Affairs at the APA address; (202) 336-6025; e-mail: S.Leverty.

University Volunteer Network promotes the benefits of APA

APA provides many services for psychology students, but not all students are aware of the benefits APA can provide. Help get the word out by joining the University Volunteer Network (UVN). Volunteers in colleges and universities across the nation help students get connected to APA--and its many services--through the UVN. To learn more about the UVN or becoming a UVN faculty volunteer, contact David DeVito, (800) 374-2721, ext. 5584.

Apply for travel grants to Chile psychology conference

APA has requested funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to support a block travel grant for U.S. citizens and residents participating in the scientific program of the 28th Interamerican Congress of Psychology in Santiago, Chile, July 29-Aug. 3.

NIMH funding will be used exclusively for scholars working in areas that are central to the NIMH mission to increase knowledge and improve research methods on mental and behavioral disorders; to generate information regarding basic biological and behavioral processes underlying these disorders and the maintenance of mental health; and to develop and improve mental health treatment and services. At least half of the awards will be granted to investigators who are students or within eight years of receiving their doctoral degree.

Although APA has not received final approval from NIMH on availability of funding, applications are now available from the APA Office of International Affairs at the APA address; (202) 336-6025; fax: (202) 218-3599; e-mail International.
