Foundation initiates fund-raising campaign
The American Psychological Foundation (APF) has launched the first fund-raising campaign in its history. Known as the Campaign for a New Era, the initiative seeks to raise $7 million by 2004. APF's funds are given to programs that foster the best and brightest students in psychology, support cutting-edge psychological research and recognize those psychologists whose excellent projects, research and careers have led the way.
The Campaign for a New Era will enable APF to deepen and broaden the scope of these programs. "We want to give psychology away and improve the well-being of all of us for generations to come," says APF President Dorothy W. Cantor, PsyD.
Top priorities for campaign funding are understanding and preventing violence and understanding the connection between the mind and the body. APF will also be increasing the size of its endowment for scholarships and existing grants in areas such as serious mental illness, neuropsychology, child psychology and the elimination of prejudice such as homophobia.
"This is a pivotal moment in APF's history," notes Elisabeth R. Straus, APF executive vice president and executive director. "The trustees and others who care deeply about psychology are mobilizing to advance the field in novel directions."
A Campaign Leadership Cabinet will be working with other leaders in psychology to ensure the success of the campaign and the future of psychology. Members of the Leadership Cabinet include chair Dorothy
W. Cantor, PsyD, Mathilda Canter, PhD, Raymond D. Fowler, PhD, Ronald E. Fox, PhD, Lee Gurel, PhD, Drs. Joseph D. and Ruth G. Matarazzo, Charles L. McKay, Stephen F. Morin, PhD, Lisa Porché Burke, PhD, Harry Sands, PhD, and E. Belvin Williams, PhD.
