APA divisions, the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), APA's Science Student Council, Psi Chi, Psi Beta and other groups sponsor programs geared toward students on topics ranging from first-time grant writing to finding mentors. Here are a few programs and events for students worth checking out. (Check convention program for locations and note that times may change.)

Thursday, Aug. 23

  • "Developing teachers workshop," a program geared for students interested in teaching and new faculty, sponsored by APA's Education Directorate, is held all day Thursday and the morning of Friday, Aug. 24.

  • "The career paths workshop," geared toward students and new professionals, features speakers from various psychology careers. The session is set for 1 to 5 p.m.

  • "APAGS preconvention in-depth internship workshop," sponsored by APAGS, is held from 6 to 10 p.m. (Contact APAGS's office for registration information.)

Friday, Aug. 24

  • "Ethnic-minority student professional development workshop," sponsored by Div. 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues), is held from 9 a.m. to noon.

  • Symposium on careers for psychology majors, sponsored by Psi Chi, is held from 11 a.m. to noon.

  • "Training graduate students in computer applications for group," sponsored by Div. 49 (Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy), is held from 11 a.m. to noon.

  • "Dissertation support groups," sponsored by Div. 49, is held in the division's hospitality suite from noon to 1 p.m.

  • "The scientist-therapist gap: what students need to know," sponsored by Teachers of Psychology at Secondary Schools (TOPSS), is held at noon.

  • "Commemorating 20 years: the past, present and future of Psi Beta," sponsored by Psi Beta and the APA Board of Educational Affairs, is held from 2 to 3 p.m.

  • Psi Beta chapter information exchange and award presentation, sponsored by Psi Beta, is held from 3 to 4 p.m.

  • Poster session and reception, sponsored by Div. 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative), is held from 5 to 7 p.m.

  • Student Affiliates in School Psychology business meeting and social hour is held from 6 to 9 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 25

  • "A practical guide to your first grant submission to NIH," spons- ored by APA Divs. 28 (Psycho- pharmacology and Substance Abuse) and 50 (Addictions) is held from 9 to 11 a.m.

  • "What can I do with a psychology major?" sponsored by TOPSS, is held at 10 a.m.

  • "Nontraditional psychology students: issues and pedagogic strategies," sponsored by Div. 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology), is held from 10 to 11 a.m.

  • "Navigating the internship application process: survival strategies from APAGS and APPIC," is sponsored by APAGS and Divs. 12 (Society for Clinical Psychology), 16 (School), 17 (Counseling), 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs) and 54 (Society of Pediatric Psychology), and is held from noon to 2 p.m.

  • Symposium on graduate school in psychology, sponsored by Psi Chi, is held from 1 to 3 p.m.

  • APAGS's open meeting and awards ceremony is held from 4 to 5 p.m.

  • A breakfast networking meeting with information on internships, postdoctoral fellowship and job opportunities, sponsored by Div. 18 (Psycholo- gists in Public Service), is held at 8 a.m.

  • A meeting of the student group of Div. 52 (International) is held at 8 a.m.

  • "Psychology reaches out: introducing psychological science to local schools," sponsored by Board of Scientific Affairs and APA's Science Student Council (APASSC), is held from 8 to 10 a.m.

  • "Up close and personal: Barlow, Maslach and Roediger," is a discussion hour for students with David Barlow, PhD, of Boston University, Christina Maslach, of the University of California­Berkeley, and Henry L. Roediger, PhD, of Washington University. The session is sponsored by APAGS and APASSC and is held from 9 to 10 a.m.

  • "Innovative international opportunities for psychology and other college/university students," sponsored by Div. 52, is held from noon to 2 p.m.

  • "Succeeding in graduate school: getting into, getting through, getting on," sponsored by Div. 1 (General), is held from noon to 2 p.m.

  • "Performance excellence: alternative careers in sport psychology," sponsored by Div. 47 (Exercise and Sports), is held from noon to 2 p.m.

  • Student Affiliates in School Psychology, the student organization of Div. 16, will host a miniconvention on grantwriting and internships in the Div. 16 hospitality suite from noon to 3 p.m.
