Early-career scientists interested in the field of positive psychology are eligible for the Templeton Positive Psychology Prize, now in its third year, and the newly established Positive Psychology Young Scholars Grants Program.
The Templeton Prize is sponsored by APA and the John Templeton Foundation. The prize includes four awards, of $100,000, $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000. The awards recognize young scholars whose research works to identify and understand human strengths--from optimism, future-mindedness and courage to self-control, thrift and persistence.
Candidates for the 2002 Templeton Prize must be nominated by a person with the rank of professor or its equivalent. Nominees must be no older than 40 or have received their doctoral degree no more than 12 years previously. Candidates need not be psychologists.
Nominees should submit two scholarly papers published or written within two years of the date of nomination, a statement of future scientific aims and up to four letters of recommendation. Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 1 and should be mailed to Terry Kang, Positive Psychology Network, University of Pennsylvania, 3815 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-6196.
The 2001 Positive Psychology Young Scholars Grants Program, sponsored by the Positive Psychology Network and the John Templeton Foundation, offers 18-month seed grants of up to $10,000 each to support early-career scientists whose research centers on positive psychology.
Applicants are expected to be new assistant professors or postdoctoral fellows at an academic institution, but exceptions will be considered. There is no age limit. The grants may not be used for salary or to pay indirect costs. Successful applicants must provide reports on their research after 12 and 18 months.
Interested applicants should submit a two- to three-page proposal, a budget not to exceed $10,000, a curriculum vitae and a letter of recommendation that addresses the applicant's research promise and his or her fit to the field of positive psychology. Applications are accepted on a continuing basis and will be reviewed quarterly.
