Emotion, memory, learning, health, mental health and the brain: These topics--and the various means of studying them--headline 2004 convention programming offered by APA's Board of Scientific Affairs (BSA).

The University of Hawaii's Bruce F. Chorpita, PhD, will present the BSA-invited address, "Making evidence-based decisions in children's mental health services," on Friday, July 30, at 10 a.m. And J. Bruce Overmier, PhD, of the University of Minnesota, will deliver this year's Neal Miller Annual Lecture on "Extending the history of animal laboratory contributions to the clinic" on Friday, July 30, at 11 a.m.

As always, four scientists will receive Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards. This year's recipients and their presentations are:

* E. Mavis Hetherington, PhD, University of Virginia, "Lessons learned and unlearned in 35 years of studying marital transitions," Friday, July 30, 10 a.m.

* Richard M. Shiffrin, PhD, Indiana University, "How we remember, and what I remember about this research," Friday, July 30, 11 a.m.

* Sheldon Cohen, PhD, Carnegie Mellon University, "How social networks and social supports influence our health" (also a presidential-track talk), Saturday, July 31, 10 a.m.

* Edward Taub, PhD, University of Alabama at Birmingham, "CI therapy: behavioral treatment that harnesses brain plasticity after neurological injury," Saturday, July 31, 10 a.m.

Master lectures

BSA has also named five psychologists to be the 2004 Master Lecturers. The lectures spotlight experts in psychological science and are organized by core areas of the field.

This year's featured lecturers and their topics are:

* Mark E. Bouton, PhD, University of Vermont, "Learning, extinction and emotion in the context of time," Friday, July 30, 11 a.m.

* Susan T. Fiske, PhD, Princeton University, "The perils of prejudice: emotional biases in the brain, mind and behavior," Friday, July 30, 11 a.m.

* Leona S. Aiken, PhD, and Stephen G. West, PhD, Arizona State University, "Extending multiple regression analysis to novel forms of psychological data," Saturday, July 31, 10 a.m.

* Ian H. Gotlib, PhD, Stanford University, "Interpersonal, cognitive and biological aspects of depression: toward an integration," Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m.

* Stephen J. Suomi, PhD, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, "How specific gene-environment interactions can shape biobehavioral development in primates," Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m.

Committee programming

BSA's committees will also hold sessions at the Honolulu convention. These include the following:

* The symposium "Challenges for psychological testing and assessment in Asia," held by the Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessment on Friday, July 30, at 10 a.m.

* The program "Recovery and pain after injury: from research to treatment," held by the Committee on Animal Research and Ethics on Saturday, July 31, at 11 a.m., and led by James Grau, PhD, of Texas A&M University.
