Positive psychology, the neurobiology of stress and an evolutionary perspective on sexism and racism headline programs organized by APA's Board of Scientific Affairs (BSA).

Rockefeller University's Bruce McEwen, PhD, will give this year's Neal Miller Annual Lecture on "The Neurobiology of Stress: Implications for Behavioral Medicine" on Friday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m.

Four researchers will receive the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards. They are:

• Michael Davis, PhD, of Emory University, "Neural Systems Involved in Fear and Anxiety," on Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m.

• Marcia K. Johnson, PhD, of Yale University, "Reality Monitoring," on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m.

• Martin E.P. Seligman, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania, "Positive Psychology and Positive Psychotherapy," on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m.

• John P. Campbell, PhD, of the University of Minnesota, "Competency, Adaptability, Performance, Productivity: Scientific Constraints or Words to Exploit?" on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 4 p.m.

Master lectures

BSA has also named six psychologists to be the 2004 master lecturers. The lectures spotlight experts in psychological science and are organized according to core areas of the field. This year's lecturers are:

• Rich C. Savin-Williams, PhD, of Cornell University, "The New Gay Teenager: Not Sick, Not Gay, Not Invisible," on Friday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m.

• John B. Willet, PhD, and Judith D. Singer, PhD, of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, "Improving the Quality of Longitudinal Research: Current Status and Future Prospects," on Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m.

• Elaine F. Walker, PhD, of Emory University, "Adolescent Neurodevelopment and Mental Health: A Critical Opportunity for Prevention," on Friday, Aug. 11, at noon.

• John Gabrieli, PhD, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, "Regulation of Thoughts, Memories and Feelings in the Human Brain," on Friday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m.

• James Sidanius, PhD, of the University of California, Los Angeles, "The Interactive Nature of Patriarchy and Arbitrary-set Hierarchy: The Dynamics of Sexism and Racism from an Evolutionary and Social Dominance Perspective," on Friday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m.

Committee programming

BSA's committees will also hold sessions at the convention. These include:

• The symposium "The Notion of Measurement Equivalence Across Diverse Populations: Examining the Critical Issues," to be held by the Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessment on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m.

• The symposium "Writing Your First Grant: Sources of Funding for Graduate School and Beyond," to be held by the Science Student Council on Friday, Aug. 11, at noon.

• The invited address "Neural Mechanisms of Extinction: Relevance to Exposure-based Psychotherapy," to be held by the Committee on Animal Research and Ethics on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m.
