Div. 9 announces sabbatical fellow program

APA’s Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues–SPSSI) will host a program through which sabbatical scholars may work on policy issues for a semester or year in SPSSI’s Washington, D.C., office. Sabbatical scholars will receive office space and the opportunity to work with the SPSSI Marshall Policy Scholar and engage in other policy-related activities.

To apply, send a curriculum vitae and letter of interest describing your policy and research background, the policy issues in which you are most interested and a proposed time period, to e-mail by July 15.

Applicants should be members of SPSSI. Scholars to begin in fall should apply by July 15 and will be chosen by July 30. Scholars to begin in spring 2008 should apply by Sept. 15 and will be chosen in October 2007.

Div. 32 announces first annual conference

Div. 32 (Humanistic) will hold its first annual conference, “Humanistic Psychotherapies for the 21st Century,” Aug. 14–16 at the San Francisco Airport Marriot, before APA’s Annual Convention. The focus will be on evolution in theory, research and practice. Attendees may earn up to 24 hours of continuing-education credits.

Apply for Div. 37 Dissertation Award

Div. 37 (Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice) invites applications for its $400 Student Dissertation Award for a completed doctoral dissertation concerning issues of social policy, service delivery, welfare or advocacy for children, youth and families.

The Div. 37 Executive Committee will judge papers on the following dimensions: scientific, technical or clinical importance; originality and creativity of the work; adequacy of the research design and methods; quality of the conclusions drawn from results; quality of the written presentation.

Applicants must be members of Div. 37. Students may apply prior to sending their submission. Applications should include a copy of the completed dissertation, the signed cover page, and an abstract of no more than 1,000 words summarizing the research and its relevance to Div. 37’s mission (available at www.apa.org/divisions/div37).

Div. 14 holds annual conference this month

Management and leadership authority Jeffrey Pfeffer, PhD, will present at the opening session of the Div. 14 (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology–SIOP) 22nd annual conference this month in New York City.

Pfeffer is the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and the author or co-author of 10 books, including the critically acclaimed “Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense: Profiting from Evidence-Based Management,” and “Hidden Value: How Great Companies Achieve Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People.”

More than 250 other sessions cover a wide range of workplace topics, including the use of personality tests to predict worker behavior, employee retention, employment interviews, workplace stereotypes, effective leadership and work and family issues.

Div. 39 supports military families

Div. 39 (Psychoanalysis) continues to support services to extended families of military serving in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition to its continuing partnership with Strategic Outreach to Families of All Reservists (SOFAR)—a pro bono project providing support, psychotherapy, psychoeducation and prevention services to extended family of deployed military reservists and national guard—the division is collaborating with Div. 19 (Society for Military Psychology).

At the Div. 19 winter meeting, Div. 39 members Jaine Darwin, PsyD, and Marilyn Jacobs, PhD, presented a panel, “The Aftermath of Combat: Understanding and Treating Traumatic Stress Syndromes.” The two divisions are co-sponsoring a panel at APA’s Annual Convention. Div. 19 and Div. 39 members are meeting to address the problem of how to meet the escalating mental health needs of returning veterans and their extended families.

Div. 42 celebrates 25th anniversary

Div. 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice) announces its 25th anniversary, to be celebrated at APA’s Annual Convention with special programming, including “Whole Person Health Care: Models of Collaboration for the Independent Practitioner,” “Whole Person Health Care: Psychologist Collaboration in Cancer Care,” “Whole Person Health Care: Psychologist Collaboration with Internists, Gynecologists and Oncologists,” “Whole Person Health Care: Collaboration with Providers to Special Populations.” The division will also hold a large social hour and an expanded student poster session, in addition to its usual membership meeting.

Submit nominations for Div. 46 2007 News Media Recognition Award

Nominate a journalist with a track record of excellence in reporting about psychology and/or mental health issues for the Div. 46 (Media) 2007 News Media Recognition Award. This annual award goes to a journalist/reporter/ producer from either print or broadcast media for excellence in the reporting of psychological information and research.

The recipient of the News Media Recognition Award will be announced at APA’s Annual Convention. The award was developed in 2002 by the News Media, Public Education, Public Policy Committee.

Div. 51 announces National Psychotherapy with Men Conference

Div. 51 (Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity) announces the first National Psychotherapy with Men Conference, to be held at California State University (CSU), Northridge on June 2.

The conference will include video presentations of clinical work with men, keynote addresses by Aaron Rochlen, PhD, and A.J. Franklin, PhD, and interactive panel presentations. The conference is oriented for both student and professional practitioners of all mental health disciplines. Co-sponsors include APA Divs. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) and Div. 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues), the Committee on Division/APA Relations, the University of La Verne psychology department, Phillips Graduate Institute, CSU, Fullerton Department of Counseling, Antioch University and the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University.

Div. 51 also announces its offering of seven graduate student scholarships to attend the program “Teaching the Psychology of Men” at APA’s Annual Convention.

The introductory workshop will show participants how to create a psychology of men course or how to infuse such content into courses on gender or the psychology of women. Presenters will share their syllabi, reading materials, class manuals, evaluation processes and other resources.

The division offers these scholarships to ensure that the next generation of professors knows about this increasingly popular subject, says Jim O’Neil, PhD, chair of the division’s Committee on Teaching the Psychology of Men.

Div. 55 seeks nominations for prescriptive authority awards

The Awards Committee of APA Div. 55 (American Society for the Advancement of Pharmacotherapy) is soliciting nominations for outstanding contributions to the prescriptive authority movement. Two awards will honor Div. 55 members who have made outstanding contributions at the state or national level. The third award, the Patrick H. DeLeon Prize, will be given for an outstanding contribution by a student or early-career psychologist.

Nominees for the Outstanding Contribution at the State Level award will be considered based on a sustained history of excellence in advancing the prescriptive authority agenda. Nominations should detail accomplishments in measurable terms, introduction of legislation, organization of effective advocacy groups, papers or presentations at meetings, or other demonstrable achievements in advancing the prescriptive authority agenda. Nominees for the Outstanding National Contribution Award will be considered based on a sustained history of excellence in advancing the prescriptive authority agenda nationally.

The Patrick H. DeLeon Prize, established in 2002, is awarded annually for an outstanding paper, thesis or dissertation in the areas of clinical psychopharmacology or prescriptive authority for psychologists. The award is aimed at graduate students or early-career psychologists. Submissions may be published or unpublished, but should substantially reflect work done as a graduate student. Submissions with multiple authors are considered. However, the applicant must be the first author on the paper submitted. The prize carries a cash award of $500.

The deadline for nominations is May 15. Nominees for the career awards must be members or fellows of Div. 55. Nominees for the DeLeon Prize need not be affiliates or members of Div. 55, but membership is encouraged.
