APA'S ANNUAL CONVENTION
Spend an exclusive APA evening at the Asian Art Museum

Print version: page 49

APA President Sharon Stephens Brehm, PhD, is sponsoring a special APA Night at the Asian Art Museum in the spirit of her presidential convention theme of “Building Bridges, Expanding Horizons: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives.” The Asian American Psychological Association is co-sponsoring the event.

Brehm and APA have arranged to open the museum’s galleries exclusively for up to 1,200 APA members on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. Attendees can stroll the galleries while listening to musical entertainment by the Murasaki Ensemble, a San Francisco world jazz fusion group.

Attendees will receive two complimentary drink tickets each, and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. Docents will be on hand to answer questions about exhibits, and the gift shop will be open. Buses will provide transportation to and from the museum free of charge.

The Asian Art Museum—located at Civic Center Plaza and home to art pieces spanning 6,000 years—is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. The museum displays more than 2,500 artworks from such major Asian cultures as South Asia, the Persian World and West Asia, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, China, Korea and Japan.

Housing the collection is the former San Francisco main library building, which renowned architect Gae Aulenti—designer of Paris’s Musée d’Orsay—recently redesigned with inspiration from beaux arts and modern design.

Visitors can view two special exhibitions during convention: “Yoshitoshi’s Strange Tales” and “Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga.” For more information, visit the museum’s Web site at www.asianart.org.

Tickets are free but required for admission. They are first-come, first-served, limited to four tickets per person and available for pick up at the APA special events desk in the convention registration area beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, until all tickets have been distributed.
