VOLUME 29 , NUMBER 5 -May 1998

San Francisco welcomes APA members

San Francisco inspires images recognized the world over: the Golden Gate Bridge,Fisherman?s Wharf, Chinatown, cable cars, that beautiful city by the Bay. San Francisco heightens an appreciation for 'the good life.' Known for its fine restaurants and shops, San Francisco has something for every appetite and budget. Home to the highest concentration of arts organizations in the country, audiences are captivated by everything from street minstrels and sidewalk art shows to the highly acclaimed San Francisco Opera and Symphony and a multitude of fascinating museums. Stroll through Golden Gate Park past the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Children?s Playground (complete with carousel) and the National AIDS Memorial Grove. Take the ferry to Alcatraz or Sausalito, head north to Muir Woods and see the magnificent redwoods, or explore wine country in Napa and Sonoma?just an hour?s drive from the city. Two days or two decades here reveal only that there is more to learn, more to see, more to do.

APA?s 106th Annual Convention will be held in San Francisco, Aug. 14 ?18. As stated in the Association Rules, the purposes of the Annual Convention are (a) to provide a forum in which members may present their scientific and scholarly work, (b) to present a general program that will be informative and of interest to all members of the Association, (c) to facilitate the exchange of experience relating to the applications of psychology, and (d) to provide a place where the business of the Association can be carried on efficiently.

Convention programs are developed by the several substantive divisions of APA and include symposia, paper and poster sessions, invited addresses, discussions, workshops, and so on. Meetings are scheduled in the Moscone Center, the San Francisco Marriott Hotel, The Palace Hotel, and the Parc Fifty Five Hotel. Most of the convention program is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the five days of the meeting.

24th International Congress of Applied Psychology

The 24th International Congress of Applied Psychology, sponsored by the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), will take place immediately preceding the 106th Annual Convention in San Francisco. APA is hosting the Congress, marking the first time that this prestigious international meeting will convene in the United States. The Congress is scheduled from Sunday, August 9, through Friday, Aug. 14, at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel and Towers. Joint APA/IAAP events are planned for Friday, Aug. 14. A separate registration booklet can be obtained by writing to 24th ICAP, c/o APA Convention Office, 750 First St., N.E., Washington, DC 20002-4242. Information is also available on APA?s web site at http://www.apa.org/convention.

Transportation

Transportation from San Francisco International Airport is available by taxicab and airport express bus. Taxicab fare from San Francisco International is approximately $30. The SFO Airporter bus serves the following hotels on APA?s housing list: San Francisco Marriott, The Palace Hotel, Parc Fifty Five, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, San Francisco Hilton and the St. Francis. The bus operates seven days a week and departs every 15 minutes from the airport, outside the baggage claim area on the lower level, to the aforementioned hotels between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and midnight, and from the hotels back to the airport on a regular schedule (call 415-495-8404 for information). SFO Airporter fares are $10 one-way and $18 round-trip; children under 12 ride free. Information on door-to-door van service can be obtained by calling Supershuttle at (415) 871-7800. For those driving to San Francisco, 24-hour guest parking at the APA headquarters hotels costs between $22 and $26. People taking Amtrak to San Francisco will arrive at the Amtrak station in Oakland and transfer to an Amtrak bus, which will take them across the Bay Bridge to the Ferry Building, located at the foot of Market Street. From there, it is only a short taxi ride to the hotels. All prices noted above are subject to change.

Travel Tips

San Francisco has been blessed with a mild marine climate. Temperatures seldom rise above 75°F or fall below 40°F. Morning and evening fogs are standard during the summer months but rarely persist during the day. Light jackets or sweaters are recommended for those foggy summer days. California state sales tax is 8.5 percent. Hotel rooms are taxed 14 percent.

Program Availability

The Convention Program will be mailed within the United States and Canada only to advance registrants and individuals who specifically request a program. Individuals who are not planning to attend the convention but who would like to receive a Convention Program should complete the mailing label on the Advance Registration Form. Programs will be available in early to mid-July, after the advance registration deadline of June 23. Convention preregistrants should bring their copies of the program to the convention. There will be a charge of $5 for additional copies of the program. Our supply of programs in San Francisco will be limited. If you are uncertain about whether you will attend the convention, highlights of the program will appear in the May and June issues of the APA Monitor.

Registration

Convention attendees are urged to register for the meeting in advance. Advance registration not only assists APA in planning for the convention but also represents a savings to the registrants and provides them the opportunity to obtain desired hotel space and rates. In addition, the APA Placement Area, as well as the APA Exhibit Area, will be restricted to people who are wearing badges.

Registration fees are required in order to support the increasing costs associated with the convention, as well as the need to comply with the Association?s rule that the convention be a self-sustaining service of the Association. Persons who request a replacement badge during the convention will be charged $2 each time the request is made. Nonmember spouses/equivalents and dependents under age 18 may register by paying a nonrefundable processing fee of $5 per person if their names appear on the registration form of a fee-paying registrant. The registration fees for the 1998 convention are as follows:

For those registering in advance (before June 23, 1998)

$130 APA Member, Fellow, Associate, or Dues-Exempt Member; APA International Affiliate
$155 Nonmember of APA
$40 APA Student Affiliate
$60 Full-Time Student; APA High School Teacher Affiliate
$5(Processing Fee) If noted on form of fee-paying registrant: Nonmember Spouses/Equivalents; Dependents Under Age 18

For those registering on-site in San Francisco

$175 APA Member, Fellow, Associate, or Dues-Exempt Member; APA International Affiliate
$180 Nonmember of APA
$50 APA Student Affiliate
$70 Full-Time Student; APA High School Teacher Affiliate
$5(Processing Fee) If noted on form of fee-paying registrant: Non member Spouses/Equivalents; Dependents Under Age 18

The convention badge, with name and institutional affiliation; the Expocard; and the Convention Program will be mailed in advance of the convention to those who preregister. Advance registrants need only obtain a badge holder at the APA registration area in San Francisco to complete the procedure and thus avoid delays.

Complete registration facilities will be maintained at the Moscone Center according to the following schedule:

Thursday, Aug. 13 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 14 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 15 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 16 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 17 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Because of administrative delays, APA will not accept purchase orders for payment of convention registration fees.

Refund policy: Advance registrants who are unable to attend the convention may request a refund of their registration fee if a written request is received before Aug. 18. A full refund of the registration fee will apply to requests received by June 23; a 75 percent refund will apply to requests received between June 23 and July 15; and a 50 percent refund will apply to requests received between July 15 and Aug. 18. After Aug. 18, no refunds will be issued.

Housing

In cooperation with APA, all of the APA hotels have set aside substantial blocks of rooms. These rooms for the convention are available only when reservations are made through APA/San Francisco Housing Bureau on the official Advance Convention Registration and Housing Forms before June 23, 1998. Because advance registration is necessary before housing requests can be processed, the San Francisco Housing Bureau will not accept reservations over the telephone or by facsimile. After June 23, every effort will be made to assign rooms in APA hotels, but it is unlikely that late requests can be honored. APA?s unused room blocks, in all of its hotels, will be returned to the hotels on June 23. Room rates may revert to regular rates at that time. Hotel rooms for people arriving in the city at the last minute will probably be expensive, scarce or nonexistent. To ensure having a hotel room in an APA hotel, we strongly recommend that individuals register in advance and complete the Housing Form.

Registrants should bear in mind that rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. As the date of the convention draws near, there is no guarantee that people sending in housing forms will obtain a room in the specific hotel requested in the type of room requested, or at the rate requested. If accommodations are not available at the hotel of your choice, comparable reservations will be made at other contracted hotels. If the rate requested is not available, rooms will be confirmed at the next available rate. During past conventions, the headquarters hotels have been filled by early May. It is anticipated that the headquarters hotels will also be filled early in San Francisco. Housing requests received toward the end of the advance registration period have usually been assigned alternate housing.

Please note that the availability of rooms before Aug. 14 for people attending preconvention activities is limited. San Francisco Housing Bureau will attempt to accommodate those individuals who require hotel reservations before August 14 insofar as possible. Registrants are advised to return the Advance Registration and Housing Forms as early as possible. These forms appear at the end of this announcement.

Beginning in April, all Housing Forms are sent from the Central Office to the San Francisco Housing Bureau for hotel assignments. A confirmation of your reservation will be sent by the San Francisco Housing Bureau within a four-week period. This confirmation will be the only acknowledgment of your hotel reservation and will be honored at the time of arrival in San Francisco. If you do not receive your hotel confirmation in a reasonable amount of time, please contact San Francisco Housing Bureau directly at P.O. Box 825, 108 Wilmot Road, Fourth Floor, Deerfield, IL 60015; United States and Canada, (800) 424-5256; outside United States and Canada, (847) 940-2154.

In San Francisco, a deposit of $150 per room (to be immediately credited to your account) must be sent with your Housing Form. Payment can be made by providing an American Express, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit card number on your Housing Form or by including a check made out to 'San Francisco Housing Bureau.' If a deposit is not received, your hotel reservations will not be processed.

Persons sharing a room are requested to send in only one Housing Form with the names of all of the occupants of the room. By law, there is a limit of four persons to a room, and some hotels will not accept reservations for four persons in a room. Room confirmation will be sent only to the person requesting the reservation. Colleagues wishing to stay in the same hotel should submit their forms in the same envelope.

Changes and cancellations: San Francisco Housing Bureau will forward APA?s convention housing list to the hotels on July 13. Consequently, San Francisco Housing Bureau will have the only record of your hotel reservation until that date. Please notify San Francisco Housing Bureau of any CHANGES (other than time of arrival) AND ALL CANCELLATIONS by writing, faxing or telephoning San Francisco Housing Bureau before July 10. Beginning July 15 changes and cancellations should be made directly with your confirmed hotel. Your $150 deposit will be refunded less a $15 cancellation fee. Reservations canceled within 72 hours of the arrival date are subject to forfeiture of the entire amount of the deposit. The deposit is wholly retained by the hotel.

Arrangements for Persons With Disabilities

The APA Council of Representatives has adopted 'Guidelines on Physical and Social Accessibility,' prepared by the APA Task Force on Psychology and the Handicapped. In compliance with these guidelines, the Board of Convention Affairs asks each person with a disability who is planning to attend the convention to identify himself or herself and to provide information on how APA can make the convention more accessible for him or her. Please check the appropriate box on the Advance Registration and Housing Forms if you are disabled and would like assistance in facilitating your attendance at the convention. A note outlining your specific needs should accompany the Advance Registration and Housing Forms. APA will provide a van with a lift as transportation for persons who use wheelchairs, interpreters for hearing-impaired individuals, and escorts/readers for persons with visual impairments if specific requests are provided at the time of advance registration. During the convention, persons with disabilities who desire a place to relax or who desire assistance with wheelchair repairs, readers, escorts, interpreters, and so on may visit the APA Resource Room for Persons With Disabilities.

To facilitate hotel reservations for those who need wheelchair accessibility, visual, or hearing aids, the Board of Convention Affairs has compiled information on the headquarters hotels. It is strongly suggested that persons who are in need of wheelchair-accessible accommodations request housing at one of the following hotels (in ranked order): (1) The Palace Hotel, (2) San Francisco Marriott Hotel, or (3) Parc Fifty Five Hotel. The Placement Center coordinates with the APA Resumé Referral Service a year-round computerized employment referral system, offered by APA in cooperation with Resumé-Link, which is based in Columbus, Ohio. Job applicants should complete the 1998 Resumé Referral Service Information Form (found elsewhere in this announcement) and mail it with their two-page resumé and the nominal service charge directly to Resumé-Link. Job applicants who enroll in the APA Resumé Referral Service in advance will have their resumés included in the 'Before Convention' disk mailed to all participating employers. The deadline for advance enrollment is June 16.

Job applicants may also enroll for the APA Resumé Referral Service on-site, but we strongly urge advance enrollment to increase exposure to employers. Applicants should indicate if they will be attending the 1998 Annual Convention in San Francisco.
