Several days of programs geared for educators

A slate of exciting programming on teaching and learning.

APA has developed a variety of Annual Convention programs geared specifically for the needs of today?s educators?and anyone interested in educational issues in psychology. Listed below are some highlights.

Teaching, Learning and Education Issues, Aug. 13?19

To assist students and members interested in teaching, learning, and education issues, APA?s Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) and the Education Directorate are sponsoring an education track of convention programs.

Because educational issues cut across all fields of psychology, APA divisions were invited to co-list programs with BEA. Twenty-nine divisions have agreed to participate with BEA and the Education Directorate. Those groups are: the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), Psi Chi, Psi Beta, and Division 2 (Teaching), 3 (Experimental), 5 (Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics), 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative), 10 (Psychology and the Arts), 13 (Consulting), 14 (Industrial/Organizational), 15 (Educational), 16 (School), 20 (Adult Development and Aging), 21 (Applied Experimental and Engineering), 22 (Rehabilitation), 25 (Experimental Analysis of Behavior), 27 (Community), 28 (Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse), 29 (Psychotherapy), 30 (Hypnosis), 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs), 35 (Women), 37 (Child, Youth and Family Services), 38 (Health), 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology), 41 (Psychology Law), 42 (Independent Practice), 44 (Lesbian and Gay Issues), 47 (Exercise and Sport), 49 (Group), 51 (Men and Masculinity) and 52 (International).

These programs co-listed by BEA will be presented in a special brochure that will be widely distributed to students and members before the convention. They will also be displayed on the Education Directorate web site (for address, see box on page 49.)

Preconvention: Psi Chi Fourth Annual Miniconvention

The 1998 Psi Chi: Golden Gate Miniconvention will be a full day of interactive sessions 9 a.m.? 5 p.m. with a chance to share lunch and ideas with some of the outstanding psychology faculty and students in the United States. The keynote address will be presented by Psi Chi?s invited guest, Jill Reich, PhD, executive director of APA?s Education Directorate.

Preconvention: High School Teachers

As part of this year?s preconvention activities, the APA?s Education and Science directorates, in conjunction with the Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools, will conduct a two-day High School Teacher Workshop on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 12-13.

BEA Breakfast Social Hour

The annual BEA Breakfast Social will take place on Friday, Aug. 14, 8?8:50 a.m. for all students and members interested in education and training issues at any level. Plan to join us for breakfast and informal discussion with members of the BEA.

Education Directorate?s Partnership Breakfast: Teachers Networking Across Academic Levels

Psychology Partnerships Project (P3) fosters communication and collaboration among teachers of psychology at all academic levels and between psychology teachers and other psychology professionals, teachers in other disciplines, business organizations and community groups to address teaching and learning needs in the 21st century. Please join us for breakfast on Saturday, Aug. 15, 8-8:50 a.m.

50th Anniversary of the Committee on Accreditation: Past, Present and Future

To celebrate the 50-year Anniversary of Accreditation in psychology, APA?s Committee on Accreditation (CoA) will be conducting a symposium on the past, present, and future of accreditation from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. A reception will take place later that evening from 8?10 p.m. All current and former CoA members and accreditation site visitors, and program training directors, will be invited to attend.

Education and Training Awards

Geoffrey Keppel and Edward P. Sheridan are the 1997 recipients of the Distinguished Career Contribution to Education and Training in Psychology Award. Keppel will present his invited award address on Saturday, Aug. 15 at noon. Sheridan will present his invited address on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m.

Learner-Center Psychological Principles: Technology as a Tool for Learning

The Board of Educational Affairs Panel on the Application of Psychology to Education and the Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools will present a two-hour program using the learner-centered psychological principles (LCPs) to demonstrate their application and usage in an online, interactive setting on Friday, August 14, 10?11:50 a.m. The 14 principles are available on the world wide web (www.apa.org/ed/lcp.html) as well as in a printed, user-friendly, poster form.

Psi Beta

Psi Beta will be hosting Diversifying Psychology?s Educational Pipeline: Diversity Project 2000, on Friday, Aug. 14, 9?9:50 a.m. Following this symposium will be a workshop Innovative Community College Teaching Methods, from 10-10:50 a.m.

Panel Discussion on Specialties and Proficiencies

The Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP) looks forward to hosting a one-hour panel discussion Recognizing Specialties and Proficiences: Lessons Learned. This session, scheduled on Friday, Aug. 14, 11?11:50 a.m. will serve as a forum for CRSPPP members to present an update on CRSPPP activities and to share their perspectives regarding the process for recognizing specialties and proficiencies in professional psychology.

Advocacy

The annual Education Advocacy Breakfast will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, 8?8:50 a.m.

Education and Employment Issues

The BEA is pleased to be sponsoring a two-hour session on Education and Employment Issues in Professional Psychology: National Conference Summary, on Saturday, Aug. 15, 1?2:50 p.m. This session, included as part of the Board of Directors Training Mini-Convention, features members of the Steering Committee for the APPIC/APA national working conference on 'Supply and Demand: Training and Employment Opportunities in Professional Psychology' (November 1997).Y

Diversity Issues at the Pre-College and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology

In an effort to provide mechanisms to get 'the message' to teachers across the country, the BEA is pleased to announce Teaching Psychology as a More Inclusive Science: A Symposium with Roundtable Discussions. The roundtables will give you the opportunity to interact with the presenters and members of the Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology.

This event will take place on Friday, Aug. 14, 9?10 a.m., sponsored by Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools and co-listed with APA Div. 2 (Teaching), 9 (Social Issues), 12 (Clinical, Section IV), 17 (Counseling), 27 (Community), 35 (Women), 44 (Lesbian and Gay Issues) and 45 (Ethnic Minority Issues).
