VOLUME 30 , NUMBER 5 May 1999
APA'S 1999 ANNUAL CONVENTIONAPA set for 'Hub' meeting in AugustBoston--the city that Oliver Wendell Holmes called "The Hub of the Universe"--is a city of intriguing diversity. One of the oldest towns in the United States, Boston has retained its old-world charm while thriving as a center for modern technology, academic excellence, finance and the arts. Founded in 1630, Boston is brimming with historic sites from colonial and revolutionary days. From Paul Revere's house to the Boston Tea Party ship to the Old North Church, history is on every corner in Boston. The Freedom Trail, a walking tour through historic Boston, encompasses 16 of the most treasured sites in American history. Explore Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a lively complex of shops and restaurants in three restored buildings from the 1800s, the 18th and 19th century townhouses along the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, the trendy galleries and boutiques of Newbury Street, the Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, the Children's Museum, and the legendary picturesque campuses of Harvard University and MIT. Enjoy the entertainment and sports of Boston with a night at the theater or at the "Green Monster" Fenway Park. Discover why Boston's enduring attractions make it one of the most popular destinations in the world. Boston is the host city for APA's 107th Annual Convention, Aug. 2024. As stated in the Association Rules, the purposes of the Annual Convention are (a) to provide a forum in which members may present their scientific and scholarly work, (b) to present a general program that will be informative and of interest to all members of the Association, (c) to facilitate the exchange of experience relating to the applications of psychology, and (d) to provide a place where the business of the Association can be carried on efficiently. Convention programs are developed by the several substantive divisions of APA and include symposia, paper and poster sessions, invited addresses, discussions, workshops, and so on. Meetings are scheduled in the Hynes Convention Center, the Boston Marriott Hotel Copley Place, the Boston Park Plaza Hotel, the Sheraton Boston Hotel, and the Westin Hotel Copley Place Boston. Most of the convention program is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the five days of the meeting. Transportation Transportation from Logan International Airport is available by taxicab, airport express bus, public transportation and water shuttle. Taxis operate 24 hours a day and have a base fare of $1.50 with $0.20 for each 1/7 mile thereafter, plus toll fees. Fares from the airport to downtown Boston and Cambridge range from $15 to $20, and the trip takes about 2530 minutes. Airport express buses provided by City Transportation offer transportation to downtown Boston hotels for $7.50. For schedule information call (800) 23-LOGAN. Public transportation is provided by a free shuttle bus from the airport terminal building to the Airport Station "T" stop on the Blue Line. Take the Blue Line to the Government Center stop and transfer to the Green Line. (Most of the APA hotels are on the Green Line; see individual hotel descriptions.) Fare is $0.85 and the trip takes about 45 minutes. A water shuttle runs from Logan Airport to Rowes Wharf on Atlantic Avenue. The shuttle runs daily and departs every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes on weekends and evenings. The fare is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Upon arriving at Rowes Wharf, it will be necessary to take a taxi to the APA hotels. If you will be arriving in Boston by train, AMTRAK trains arrive and depart at South Station on the "T" Red Line and at the Back Bay Station on the "T" Orange Line. (Most of the APA hotels are near the Back Bay Station.) For those driving to Boston, 24-hour guest parking at the APA headquarters hotels costs between $22 and $24. All prices noted above are subject to change. Travel tips The average temperature in Boston in mid-August is 85°F. The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) operates the public transportation system composed of light rail and subway. This system, known as the "T", provides excellent direct service to almost anywhere in Metropolitan Boston. The four main lines, Blue, Green, Red and Orange, all run into the downtown area and out to different neighborhoods. Trains run from 5 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. (except Sunday, 6 a.m. to 12:45 a.m.), and fares are $0.85 locally and $0.85$2.00 for zone changes. To locate the MBTA, just look for the big black "T". Additional information, as well as "T" visitor passports at reduced rates, can be obtained by calling the MBTA Information Center at 1-617-222-3200. Massachusetts state sales tax is 5 percent. Hotel rooms are taxed 12.45 percent city and state sales tax. All prices listed above are subject to change. Registration Beginning March 19, register online on APA's Web Site at www.apa.org/convention/. Convention attendees are urged to register for the meeting in advance. Advance registration not only assists APA in planning for the convention but also represents a saving to the registrants. In addition, the APA Exhibit Area will be restricted to persons who are wearing badges. Registration fees are required in order to support the increasing costs associated with the convention, as well as the need to comply with the Association's rule that the convention be a self-sustaining service of the Association. Persons who request a replacement badge during the convention will be charged $2 each time the request is made. Nonmember spouses/equivalents and dependents under age 18 may register by paying a nonrefundable processing fee of $5 per person if their names appear on the registration form of a fee-paying registrant. Complete registration facilities will be maintained at the Hynes Convention Center according to the following schedule: Thursday, Aug. 19 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon Because of administrative delays, APA will not accept purchase orders for payment of convention registration fees. Refund policy: Advance registrants who are unable to attend the convention may request a refund of their registration fee if a written request is received before Aug. 24, 1999. A full refund of the registration fee will apply to requests received by July 2; a 75 percent refund will apply to requests received between July 2 and July 31; a 50 percent refund will apply to requests received between July 31 and Aug. 24. After Aug. 24, no refunds will be issued. Housing: IMPORTANT CHANGES!! APA is experimenting with a new procedure for making hotel reservations this year. Hotel reservations may be made directly through the APA/Boston Housing Bureau by Internet, fax, or phone between March 19 and Aug. 11. Only advance registration forms are to be sent to APA for processing. In cooperation with APA, all of the APA hotels have set aside substantial blocks of rooms. These rooms for the convention are available only when reservations are made through the APA/Boston Housing Bureau. To take advantage of the special APA convention rates, be sure to book your reservations through the APA/Boston Housing Bureau by July 14. After July 14, the official APA blocks will be released and the hotels may charge significantly higher rates. Hotel rooms for persons arriving in the city at the last minute will probably be expensive, scarce, or nonexistent. To ensure having a hotel room in an APA hotel, we strongly recommend that individuals obtain hotel reservations early! During past conventions, the headquarters hotels have been filled by early May. It is anticipated that the headquarters hotels will also be filled early in Boston. Housing requests received toward the end of the advance registration period have typically been assigned alternate housing. Registrants should bear in mind that rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. All rates are per room night and are subjected to a 12.45 percent tax (subject to change). Bedding preferences and other special requests will be assigned by the hotels at check in. There is no guarantee that persons will obtain a room in the specific hotel requested, in the type of room requested, or at the rate requested. If accommodations are not available at the hotel of your choice, comparable reservations will be made at other contracted hotels. If the rate requested is not available, rooms will be confirmed at the next available rate. Please note that the availability of rooms with an arrival date before August 20, 1999 may be limited. Therefore, if you are attending preconvention activities, the APA/Boston Housing Bureau will make every attempt to accommodate your needs, but cannot guarantee early arrival dates. Reservations can be made through the APA/Boston Housing Bureau by Internet, fax or phone between March 19 and Aug. 11. Requests received after July 14, will be processed on a space-available basis. To reserve a room for the APA convention choose, one of the following methods: Internet: Visit our interactive web site (www.apa.org/convention/) to book your reservation and receive confirmation immediately or Telephone: Call the APA/Boston Housing Bureau, MondayFriday, 9 a.m.7 p.m. Eastern time, at (877) 823-1611 (toll free) or (416) 385-9031 (international) or Fax: Send a completed housing form, using one form per reservation request, to (416) 443-6818. The APA/Boston Housing Bureau will send you a confirmation. Review it carefully for accuracy. Room confirmation will be sent only to the primary person requesting the reservation. If you do not receive a confirmation via e-mail, fax, or mail within 14 days of sending your request, please contact the housing bureau at (877) 823-1611. In Boston, all hotels require a deposit of $150 per room. Payment can be made by providing an American Express, Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit-card number on your housing form or by including a check made out to "Hotel Reservation Deposit Service." Credit-card deposits will be charged by the hotel holding your reservation on or after July 14. Please note, if a deposit is not received, your hotel reservation form will be returned. Persons sharing a room are requested to send in only one housing form with the names of all of the occupants of the room. By law, there is a limit of four persons to a room, and some hotels will not accept reservations for four persons in a room. Colleagues wishing to stay in the same hotel should submit their forms in the same envelope. Changes and cancellations: The APA/Boston Housing Bureau will have the only record of your hotel reservation until Aug. 12. Please notify the APA/Boston Housing Bureau of any CHANGES to your reservation and all CANCELLATIONS by writing, faxing or telephoning before Aug. 11. Cancellations will be accepted without penalty until July 14, except for reservations with check deposits. These will be assessed a $17 processing fee if cancelled. All cancellations received between July 14 and Aug. 11 will be assessed a $17 processing fee. Any cancellations made after Aug. 11 will forfeit your entire deposit. Beginning Aug. 12, you will need to call the hotel holding your reservation directly for changes and cancellations. Please check the appropriate box on the Advance Registration Form if you are disabled and would like assistance in facilitating your attendance at the convention. A note outlining your specific needs should accompany the Advance Registration and Housing Forms. APA will provide a van with a lift as transportation for persons who use wheelchairs, interpreters for hearing-impaired individuals, and escorts/readers for persons with visual impairments if specific requests are provided at the time of advance registration. During the convention, persons with disabilities who desire a place to relax or who desire assistance with wheelchair repairs, readers, escorts, interpreters, and so on may visit the APA Resource Room for persons with disabilities. To facilitate hotel reservations for those who need wheelchair accessibility, visual aids or hearing aids, the Board of Convention Affairs has compiled information on the headquarters hotels.
