VOLUME 30 , NUMBER 5 May 1999

Kennedy 'hasn't stopped yet' APA honored Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) with APA's Outstanding Leadership Award at the March State Leadership Conference in recognition of his tireless efforts to improve American health care, from supporting coverage for uninsured children and advocating for more spending on health-care research to backing increased training for health professionals.

"He is the champion of champions when it comes to health-care advocacy," said Russ Newman, PhD, JD. "And he hasn't stopped yet. This is a man who appreciates that all the past progress he has enabled in health care is in jeopardy as a result of market-driven managed care, which puts profits in front of patients, focuses on cost rather than treatment and has replaced treatment decisions with business decisions."

In accepting APA's State Award for Outstanding Leader-ship, Kennedy lauded the efforts of APA's advocacy team.

"You are well represented," he told the audience of 400 state and provincial psychological association leaders. "These advocates are...some of the best-informed, most effective representatives by any group here in Washington. I'm proud to associate with them. They give you the information...[that] speaks about the real human needs of families across this country."
