Education 'program' to zoom in on new classroom technologiesPrograms will feature interactive, multimedia presentations. Showcasing the latest technological advances in education and teaching of the science and practice of psychology, including technology in the classroom, clinical training and distance learning, is the thrust of this year's education miniconvention, sponsored by Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) and the Education Directorate during APA's 1999 Annual Convention in Boston, Aug. 2024. The education and technology miniconvention will offer two days of interactive, multimedia presentations and demonstrations with an emphasis on hands-on use of instructional technology in psychology. Some of the sessions include: * "Impact of technology on education," Friday, Aug. 20, 99:50 a.m. The opening session of the miniconvention features keynote speaker Mark Luker, PhD, of Educause, the association that promotes information technology in higher education. * "Virtual universities: the changing face of higher education," Friday, Aug. 20, 1011:50 a.m. A panel of participants from universities that offer a variety of virtual components in their educational package will discuss implications for faculty, students and the accrediting bodies. Interaction sessions * "A live, interactive demonstration of APA online information resources," Friday, Aug. 20, 11:50 p.m. Gary VandenBos, PhD, APA's executive director of communications will host an online demonstration of APA electronic products, which include the PsycINFO online database, Full-Text article database, Kidpsyc, APA Style Helper and APA's newest electronic product, Practitioner's Portal. * "Web-based courses and resources," Saturday, Aug. 21, 1011:50 a.m. Co-sponsored by Div. 14 (Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology), this interactive session will feature examples from 12 colleges and universities that are offering courses online. * "Demonstration of technology in the classroom and lab," Saturday, Aug. 21, 12:50 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS), this interactive session will show how 10 colleges and universities are using the Internet, databases, virtual lab games, web presentations and other interactive video software to teach psychology. Directorate and division programs Because educational issues cut across all fields of psychology, APA divisions were invited to co-list programs with BEA. Forty-two divisions have agreed to participate with BEA and the Education Directorate. Those groups are the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), Psi Chi, Psi Beta, and Divisions 1 (General), 2 (Teaching), 3 (Experimental), 5 (Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics), 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative), 7 (Developmental), 8 (Personality and Social), 9 (Social Issues), 10 (Psychology and the Arts), 12 (Clinical), 13 (Consulting), 14 (Industrial/Organizational), 15 (Educational), 16 (School), 17 (Counseling), 18 (Public Service), 19 (Military), 20 (Adult Development and Aging), 21 (Applied Experimental and Engineering), 22 (Rehabilitation), 23 (Consumer), 25 (Experimental Analysis of Behavior), 26 (History), 27 (Community Research and Action), 28 (Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse), 29 (Psychotherapy), 30 (Hypnosis), 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs), 32 (Humanistic), 34 (Population and Environmental), 35 (Women), 39 (Psychoanalysis), 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology), 41 (Psychology-Law Society), 42 (Independent Practice), 43 Family Psychology, 44 (Lesbian and Gay Issues), 45 (Ethnic Minority Issues), 47 (Exercise and Sport), 48 (Peace), 50 (Addictions), 52 (International). Knight, PhD, Veterans' Administration Medical Center, Boston; strategizing on job searches by Kevin W. Greve, PhD, University of New Orleans; and employment of new doctorates in the 1980s and 1990s by Jessica Kohout, PhD, of APA's Research Office. * Workshop: The academic's life: a guide to the perplexed," Saturday, Aug. 21, 9 a.m.5:00 p.m. A full-day workshop covering topics of interest to graduate students and new faculty looking for information and guidance about academic careers. The workshop will include discussions on tenure, mentoring, how academic departments work, teaching in a university and managing the department chair. * Continuing Professional Education: CE Distinguished Speaker Seminar: Speaker to be announced, Sunday, Aug. 22, 710 p.m. at the Boston Park Plaza. Participants can earn 3 CE credits for attending. Cost: $40 in advance, $60 at the door. Stanley Hall Lectures and eight TOPSS Invited Addresses, offering teachers of psychology an opportunity to hear psychologists known to be effective. Kimble, PhD, is the 1998 recipient of the Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training Award. Nadine M. Lambert, PhD, is the 1998 recipient of the Distinguished Contribution of Application of Psychology to Education and Training Award. Kimble will present his invited award address on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2-2:50 p.m. Lambert will present her invited address on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1010:50 a.m.
