Several APA divisions offer mentoring services for students and junior colleagues. Here is just a sampling of the services available. Many offer services to both women and men. Interested in becoming a mentor? You can also contact the individuals below.
Div. 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology).Div. 2 offers a Web-based mentoring program for any psychology teacher.
Div. 8 (Society for Personality and Social Psychology).Div. 8 connects college students from under-represented groups with faculty mentors through its Web site.
Div. 15 (Educational Psychology).Div. 15 holds graduate student seminars at APA Annual Conventions. Students are paired with mentors who meet with them during the meeting to discuss any questions about the conference, division or life as a professor.
Div. 17 (Counseling Psychology).Div. 17's Section for the Advancement of Women (SAW) runs a "Student Network" that helps students interested in SAW. The group chair is an ex-officio member of the SAW Governing Board.
Div. 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs).Participants in Div. 31's mentoring program should be involved in their state psychological association.
Div. 38 (Health Psychology).The Committee on Women and Health has a mentoring program for individuals interested in Women's Health.
Div. 39 (Psychoanalysis).Div. 39's mentorship program pairs graduate students with an ample supply of mentors to discuss both theory and practice issues in psychoanalysis.
Div. 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology).Div. 40 is in the process of organizing a mentoring program.
Div. 42 (Independent Practice). Div. 42 runs a listserv for members and students called "Mentors." To subscribe, send an e-mail to Listserv and write "subscribe mentors" in the body of the message.
Div. 43 (Family Psychology).Div. 43 offers a student the opportunity to serve on its board as a voting member. The student is financially supported to attend all board meetings, including APA's Annual Convention, and is actively mentored by board members.
Div. 52 (International Psychology).While the division has no formal mentoring program, members mentor informally, and welcome the opportunities to do so.
Div. 54 (Society of Pediatric Psychology).Div. 54 recommends a mentoring-intensive, specialized track in clinical pediatric psychology at Case Western Reserve University.
